I am having trouble finding 4th gear with my 901 transaxle. I can get it from 3rd after going into 5th but I cannot usually get it after being in 5th and downshifting. 1st to 2nd is also a little vague. About 2 weeks ago, I found the set screw in the coupler was loose and I tightened that, which improved things for a while. But now I am having trouble again finding 4th gear especially.
Does anyone have info on how to adjust the shift coupler? Up to this point, I have just been eyeballing it and making my best guess at the correct adjustment. There must be a more precise procedure for doing this adjustment. Can anyone who knows the correct procedure please tell me? Thanks! ![]()

just hit the search button - they all adjust the same way, and the procedure has been extensively described ad nauseum
but, you might have old, worn bushings... have they ever been replaced? finally, if the trans. is in bad shape no amount of adjustment can cover that up |

Flieger,
Your coupler bushings may be worn. I got a nice improvement in my 901 from replacing the coupler as a unit (didn't want to fiddle with the bushings), the shift rod bushing and shifter ball cup. Total was about $100. Well worth it. Ulrich |

The bushings are good. There is no slop in the coupler itself; it is only a couple years old. The problem is in the attachment of the coupler to the transaxles's selector shaft.
I will check the shifter rod bushings and the ball cup. Thanks for the replies.
