911 SC w/ Door vent windows & Pop out rear qtr windows
I was wondering...I have been drooling at the recent thread on the best looking early 911's...
well it occurs to me, I think I have a thing for the door 1/4 fly windows and the rear qtr pop-out windows. A few questions for the experts before I get all worked up: 1. are these effective? I have never been in a porsche with these type windows and dont know if they may whistle at speed, and/or, leak when raining or washing the car, and or, are the 1st place a thief will try to break into the car...am I missing anything? 2. If these window conversionshave been put on an SC, can anyone jump in with how well the conversion went, $$ and possible ease/difficulty in getting the parts, possible threads to read?? 3. Would these be desirable or bad changes to an SC as far as resale value, and/or, they break/wear out easily? 4. Why did porsche stop putting these on the cars? There must be a reason good bad or indifferent. Thank you! Bob

RE: The rear pop out windows. They leak!
Perhaps not when NEW ...with NEW seals. But over time they dry out and leak water. I think most older car owners with such windows will report that when they remove the rear seats, carpet and insulation, they find RUST in the seat buckets that can be traced to the pop-out window area.

THe SC B-pillar rcvd a bit more structure w/ the solid glass. It seems Porsche was looking for places to stiffen the body.

Randy Webb did the door window conversion on his 73 1/2, which would be about the same thing you face on your SC, except that if you opted for black, you would not be faced with re-chroming the whole window frame assembly ($$$). Remember that the door window frames with operable wings are chrome plated brass, and not brite-dip aluminum like the later frames. As a passenger in Randy's car, I found that the wind wings made so much noise that I preferred them to be shut. They are nice to about 40mph. I'm sure Randy can offer more feedback.

Thanks Scott. So, if you are driving below 40 mph and dont have a/c, which I dont, I was thinking that opening the fly/wing window would scoop some outside air into the cabin to help circulate the cabin air, no?
Then, to help the fly/wing window scoop, I would open the rear qtr windows to pull that air into the cabin and suck it out the rear of the cabin, no? I can see the potential for leaks on the rear qtr windows, but if they have new seals, wouldnt they be ok for at least 5 or so yrs before they start to shrink and/or bake out, no? thoughts, experiences well needed here by those who may have these features...+ and - comments all. Thanks

My '67 912 has both features. The last year for actual brass on the window frames, went to some pot metal in '68.
No A/C on the 912 and when it is hot, the only way it is comfortable in the car is to have the windows open and the 'wing' windows directing air into the cabin. Loud? Yeah, but it doesn't drown out the engine noise! When moving, it is great to have the wings open. I don't know if it makes much difference to have the rears open. I usually open them to vent the interior if I am closing up the car in a parking lot on a hot day. Leaving the wings open would allow anyone access to the interior as the lock is right there. I don't have leaks that I know of. Maybe I am being niave, but I wash the car with a hose and don't have water getting in through either set of windows. Without A/C in an SC, I would think the wings would be a really nice addiiton. No idea how you would go about it.

Bob-
In theory, your scenario makes sense. I have opening rear windows and fixed vent windows. I do open mine to optimize flow through the car. I can't say that, in practice, this makes a profound difference. With the humidity you have in MA, I imagine that moving air is a bigger benefit than here where, in the Summer, it is actually very dry. Certainly, the wind wings will provide a significant amount of air moving around your head. Does your SC have black or silver trim? I think that the issue of finishes will be the largest thing to overcome in this conversion.

Question about the rear pop-outs; how much do they help air flow through the car when the front windows are rolled down? A bunch, a little, can't tell the difference open or closed?

With the front windows down, I don't notice a difference myself. One opinion.

with roof open or closed the opened rear 1/4 windows is a huge difference. My rears are open all year. And no leaks.
Also.. I have spent weeks traveling around the west in my bro's '88 without the opening rear 1/4's. fwiw.. when i trashed the AC then i converted the center dash AC vent to fresh air. Makaio/Matt from Calif has info on doing the AC vent mod to Carreras. the rear 1/4 backdate info is in search.

75 911s with rear pop outs...on the highway I can tell a difference. Around town...doesn't matter. Gets hotter than hell without the AC. About the same temp as hell with the AC.

Scott: Thanks for your input.
1. Yes I have the black trim color. I guess I could plate - powder coat - paint or something all of the trim at the same time to get the same finish. Since this is an SC, I wish to stay with the black trim color. 2. A DOUBLE YES on the humidity. Today, for instance, summer is finally here and the temp is 90-95 & the humidity is about 75+%... everything is sticky feeling...like it needs to be cleaned and you could scrape a layer of mung off of anything... really gross out today. 3. SOOOOOO, from the above I believe I have reason to persue this further. QUESTION: has anyone tried this and if so, what yr parts do I need? Keep in mind that my car is an 82" SC Targa... do they have different A-Pillar angles at the windshield sides vs. coupes, thus, different door window pcs I will need or maybe this wont work on targa? Also, unfortunatley, the driving environment around here is either highway, which you can go 55 or what ever crazy speed you wish OR all other roads are 30-40 mph. **This is where one just drips sweat & sits in sweat with weather like today AND with an SC with fixed fly and rear windows. For what its worth, I am not overweight @ 6' & 190# and in good shape so the wife says so ;-) Ronin: Please do your majic with the info search you always come up with. Please try to find how & if these mods can be done..."please help me man... I am sweating just thinking about if I drive now... I would have to bring a sweat drip collection towel with me or wait till the sun goes down and pray for cooler temps and less humidity. Thanks guys! Bob

bob: i just did the conversion for the rear quarter pop outs on my '79. I would say that the difference is very noticeable--I get much more swirling air inside the cabin. Can't speak to the leaks (yet) but certainly don't notice any. the only problem I have is keeping the latch locked open--I just haven't taken the time to figure it out yet but the drivers side closes a little under high speed and/or bumps.
Go to this link to see how it's done for the rears and please let us know if you do the fronts--i'm interested in that. I spent about $75 total, posted a wtb on this board. Install pop out rear quarter windows Thanks, Jack

---"the only problem I have is keeping the latch locked open"
_______ The little knob you use to pull/push the window open and closed is also a friction point. Tightening it will keep the window from popping open or closed.

Hey Bob... my crib is closer to ocean humidity than yours I bet. I live on a sandbar ![]() what I do for sweat dripping days is drape a moist small towel or rag over my shoulders and neck. I also use a sheepskin seat cover which makes the seat cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

You are correct Ronin! If you are on Long Island you are probably more humid. Are you any where near Islip or Massapequa? Wife has college roomates that live there now and are from there.
Can you add to the above post from Jack? Jack, thank you for these. I will read these tonight IN FRONT OF MY A/C watching the ball game. Bob

I'm 15 miles from Massapequa. If they are native to Massapequa chances are their parents didn't allow them in Long Beach. Check it out for laughs. I never had to do the 1/4 install so no hard info except they are great for my act.

With the pop-outs installed and the AC/vent mod, my black/black SC was very comfortable in hot weather. Without, it was close to intolerable. As long is was not raining I would keep the pop-outs open and would keep a nice comfortable flow of air through the cabin. On hot days, sunroof open (even a little), windows down, fresh air vent open and pop-outs out was the way to go.

My pop out windows don't leak either. With no aircon, you really do need it in summer.
