Just another 915 question
Background
1982 SC runs well, the clutch adjustment is out since I cannot set it to match the 101 projects book. It appears the adjuster and the throwout release shaft were seized together. I tired pb blaster with some effect but it still appears to be binding. I am guessing complete disassembly clean and check for bad parts. It will eventually sooner than later need a clutch plate because of this. I get what from forum searches appears to be the typical high rpm buzz or grind between 1 and 2. Everything else is fine. With generic 90wt it appears to be less frequent, with the current swepco it is more noticeable or happens more often. I tried double clutching which really just lowers the rpm enough for it not to happen. I have not adjusted the shifter nor replaced the couplers or bushings. Questions Should I go through the coupler wevo or generic replacement route and bushing replacement before thinking of the 915 removal? Is it just a destined fact the synchros are going bad? If so I guess this is going to be a winter project. Could the clutch linkage issues be the root of the problem? Thanks for any insight... |

I would definately replace bushings in the shift linkage before planning a tranny rebuild. The bushings will need to be sorted out anyway and don't cost very much. I just replaced the 1/2 synchro parts on my 915 and it was well over $1000 just for the parts.
Many have posted about the positive effects just sorting out the shift linkage has done for them. That and careful shifting may hold off a tranny rebuild for some time.
