'72 911T rusted front frame

Gentlemen,
I am considering the purchase of a 1972 911T sunroof delete with 110K miles to add to my two other P-cars. Wife says OK.

Engine rebuilt at 90K miles. Engine runs very strong. The front frame is rusted (severely) where the passenger side torsion bar front attachment is located. The torsion bar attachment is rusted away. There is also some through and through rust near the rear suspension attachment point on the driver's side.

The body is in excellent condition. I checked with a magnet and no apparent major body filler. complete repaint (PPG not Glasurit) in black seven years ago is excellent. Interior excellent except small crack in dash

The Porsche OEM replacement parts are included in a purchase price of $7K.

I figure repair is about $4K at Chicago prices and repaired car should be worth $15k or so.

Purchasing from neighbor who is owner since 1985. Am I crazy? Thoughts? Caveats?

If you have all the repair parts it shouldn't cost $4,000 to repair that chassis. If you didn't have parts I would say so. Remember that there is more rust than you see now. Also probably some in the rear too. Make sure a Porsche shop does the work and checks the typical chassis rust spots all over. Many of the parts can be fabricated to repair little things and the big stuff replaced. I would DEFINETLY buy it at that price with all thats been done to it and just have it towed straight to a Porsche shop to do the work. Oh and its worth a ton more than $15,000 if you do the work well and its as nice as I think it is. It would be worth double that easily.

the majority of older 911s, the non-galvanized ones, need that front suspension pan replaced. a body shop familiar with 911s should be able to do it for a grand or less if you have the part already. if you don't buy it, someone else will, and end up with a nice car.

Rusted front pans are common, don't let that get you down, look hard at the rockers though.
