Going to be driving my new ride back Wed

I will be picking up my new(to me) 3.2 this wed and driving it back to the east coast. I will be driving Sacramento to Salt Lake on Hwy 50, probably shoot down to Denver then across to the east coast, probably on 80. Still going back and forth about shipping the car, but it's getting too close to back out. Any suggestions on faster/more scenic routes, any places to avoid? Starting to pack up and I've got my V1, AAA, cell phone, SW chip, new radio.

I'll post some pics when I get the car on Wed.

My advice is not to put the SW chip in until you get back... why introduce an unknown into a 3000 mile journey? Maybe an oil change just before you leave? Does the 3.2 have a DME relay (like my 964's did)? Get one to carry if it does. Tools? Spare new fan belt?

What a great trip your in for!

Thanks for the advice Gary, I may put in the chip when I get to Denver, I'll have had a chance to get to know the car a bit better. I do have a spare 3.2 relay, it has fresh oil and I will probably put on a new fan belt before I leave. It has a tool kit so I think I am ok on basic tools.

What a coincidence. I am picking up my new(to me) car on Wednesday as well. I followed the advice of others and I am going to bring a credit card with a high limit

FWIW, Hwy 50 thru Nevada is called 'The Lonliest Hwy. in America".... and it is. If, God forbid, you have trouble you'll be in a world of hurt. It's a pretty boring drive as well.

Neat! I love 'driving back' stories.

Agree on the chip and not introducing an unknown till you're in the safety of your own garage.

Do us a favor and bring your digicam. Document your trip back and post here. I too like 'travelogues'.

Thanks for the link Gary, I'll be sure to take lots of pics. It would be easier just to ship the car, but I dont think I will have an opportunity to drive a Porsche coast to coast again.

Enjoy the drive! I drove mine home (central PA) from Dallas. A great experience, even with a minor problem. Coast to coast would be fabulous. Where on the east coast?

I agree with the others about enjoying travelogues. I wonder if the moderators would be willing to setup a sub-forum dedicated to those to keep them all in one place. And as another suggestion, I think it would be a good idea for a sticky to be attached to that sub-forum with a writeup on travelling-with-the-911 tips.

I am all set with AAA plus, I think I get 100 miles towing, hopefully wont need it.

I'll basically be going from Fresno to NJ, just outside NYC.

I thought hwy 50 was supposed to be pretty scenic, thats why I was going there as opposed to 80.

if you hit any problems, I'm in Sacramento. If I get mine back together before you pass by, maybe I'll drive up to Tahoe on hwy 50 with you (waiting on a replacement chain tensioner).

Cool, thanks foamy911. I am going to stay in Sacramento Wed night and get on the road thurs. Do you think 50 is the best way to get to Salt lake or should I take 80?

50 is more fun until you get past Tahoe, then it's quite boring. If time is not an issue, maybe take 50 to 89 to 80, or 50 to 395 to 80. Once you get past the Tahoe area 50 is pretty desolate.

Interstates are generally boring and full of revenue collectors.

the US is full of scenic drives if you are into exploring. A fail safe is Nat's Parks and Nat'l Refuge.

if you just want to boogie across on fast 2 laners go north to Hy 2, just south of the Canadian border.
