Relay question

Can someone educate me on what a relay is? are they 1-size-fits all? and if not, are there any particular relays i should carry as spares. ive been trying to build a good spare parts kit to keep in the car and have not a clue what a relay is, what it does etc...

They are designed to wear out, eventually. That's why they plug into a socket. Having a black and red spare is a good idea.

when you say a red and black, i assume these will do ok

im unclear what makes them different from each other. with a fuse, you would obviously replace a 25a fuse with a 25a fuse.... with a relay, do i just swap like colors for like colors?
