Tuning a modded engine to pass CA smog?

I'm looking at a 1987 911 3.2 /G50 with recent top-end rebuild and these mods:

Upgrades
964 cam upgrade
SSI headers
Dansk Sport Exhaust

Downgrades
Catalytic converter has been removed

Could this 911 be tuned to pass CA smog? I know that it may fail visual inspection, due to the SSI's but apparently some people can tell the smog person that it is a "dual cat" system when he/she questions it.

However, could one adjust the mixture to actually pass the pipe test, including the more recent one on the dyno?

Give S-Car-Go and/or Porboys a call. Keep in mind that the mixture cannot be adjusted on a Carrera without changing the DME software.

I have heard that it helps if one injector plug isn't properly seated....

You need a cat to pass the visual inspection. Best to see how it does on the pipe test PRIOR to going to the smog test. Getting tagged as a gross polluter sends you to the BAR and THEY run engine numbers.

Test it, HOT and if it passes..... then take it to a "Billy Bob" tester that does Chevies....they will probably miss the lack of cat.

Idle mixture can be adjusted via a 3 mm allen screw in the AFM. Off-idle mixture can be adjusted via some finagling with the flapper spring tension once the AFM's cover has been removed. A properly functioning O2 sensor should be able to correct unless the engine's at WOT however,

Thanks guys!!

Hey Ian - hows it going?

I talked to the seller today, and he said that after all these mods, it still passed the Washington state smog test without the cat at all!!!

The bad news is that at this point another buyer has gotten to it first, and is having the PPI done, he's also from the Bay Area. So we'll see I'm not as worried about smog now.
