Possible over-rev?

Today in 3rd gear in anticipation to pass some traffic going up hill I think I touched the rev limiter. The car backfired around 3 or 4 times the tach reading died at 8000 rpm and then everything smoothed out and tach started reading again.I have points and Bosche CDI and weber 40 carbs.I am thinking that because I was still going up hill when this happened ,spark was stopped at the limit but fuel continued to flow causing a flooding situation.I originally thought that I really crashed some valves but not sure now.The oil pressure is normal, oil temp is normal,it runs fine and idles fine.Everything seems normal.Anything I should check...Thanks

Brent:

You did not mention anything about what year the car is, nor any details about your engine aside from some ignition basics and induction system so all one can do is guess,...

If you have the rev-limiting rotor, it WILL leave excess fuel in the engine when the ignition cuts out at peak revs.

Hysteresis in the VDO tach causes a lot of needle bounce so they aren't very accurate.

If the engine idles smoothly, I'd guess that its OK but I would perform a leakdown test to make sure.

I'm sorry Steve,it's a 75s with the 2.7, Webers rs exhaust and 74 ht exchangers and 40IDa webers, stock ignition Bosche CDI and Bosche coil and Distributor, rotor and points. It has had all the updates ,tensioner, raceware studs, timecerts ect.It backfired around three times going uphill part throttle with tach dead.I checked the points, cap and rotor and all look okay. The tach came alive after the engine smoothed out,I know the tach bouces all over when the points go bad.The car ran well and idled well after the backfiring,no strange exhaust colors or such.

Thanks Brent,...thats helpful,....

Dirty points make an erratic tach so I'd clean those if its not steady at idle. What rotor do you have in that? stock one at 6500 RPM?

Do the leakdown just to make sure that no harm was done,...

Brent:

If you have not done a leakdown test before and do not have the equipment to do that, leave this to a pro who can do this correctly and quantify the results to be meaningful.

Jeff Alton in Langley posts here often and I think he can do this for you. I don't know any shops in your area well enough to make a recommendation.

I'd bet money that your engine is just fine. That's what a rev limiter is for.....to keep you from doing any damage. A missed downshift is another story (going from 5th to 2nd instead of 5th to 4th for example).
