Installing new handles
Hi,
Does anyone know how to remove and replace the interior door handles for a 1980 911sc? Thanks Phil |

Do a search and you should find some instructions with photos.
I have done it a couple of times, there is a pin that goes through the back of the handle (vertically) and it has 3/4 washers that slide into grove on both ends of the shaft. Take off the pull handle and you can get to them easier. Sorry, I don't have any photos but it can be done w/o pulling the door panels, no problem. |

I just did this too.....
first, pop out the rod that goes to the handle. The rod is what actually gets moved by the handle to actuate the door release.
Once the rod is popped up, and out of the handle, it will open all the way, 90 degrees. You will see there is a pin that simply holds the handle in, like a hinge pin. You need a small screwdriver to slip the clip off of the top of the pin and it will slide out and the handle comes off. Just be careful not to lose the clip when you push it off. A small pair of needlenose pliers was all I need to reinstall the clip. (I installed the Rennline aluminum handles).

Thanks Nape75.
Its decided to rain just as I was going to start.....by the way I got some aluminium ones from Eagle in Florida. They have the perforated holes, if they are too bling then I will spray them black but will see. regards Phil |

Thread from the dead but figured this was the best way to consolidate info in forum search results.
I purchased some Rennline aluminum interior door handles for my '85 Carrera and am having some issues with installation. The Rennline handles are a bit beefier than the original and some of the original door components won't quite fit. It started with the original pivot pins, so I had to bore the "hinge" holes out slightly with a redneck drill press. The ongoing issue is that the door lock clips will not lock into the new handles. The lock clip "barbs" are too shallow to pass all the way through the handle and expand, securing it in place. Has anyone else had this issue with the Rennline interior handles? The clips themselves are so cheap I'm going to order a pair from both manufacturers on our host's store, but if they are built to the same specs as what's in the car now, they still won't work without modifying the handles to remove some material. I haven't found anyone describing similar issues on the forum, although these handles seem fairly ubiquitous, so maybe a PO used some cheap aftermarket lock clips at some point? In any case, these will probably be the cheapest Porsche parts I'll ever buy... |

This seems like a small matter for most of the capable mechanics on here but I've finally confirmed that a number of Rennline interior door handles were manufactured out of spec:
"These are not manufactured to the print and unfortunately will need to go back on our CNC machine for rework. Oddly enough, we have very few (11 units) left from the last production run which means that 38 people have struggled through installation before you contacted us..." So long story short, if you have some aftermarket Rennline handles that don't fit your 911, you're not crazy. I attempted to modify the problematic handles but the locking rod just won't stay seated in the plastic door lock clips (I tried the originals that came with my '85 as well as the Porsche and OEM versions available through our host). Rennline kindly offered to ship me a new set so hopefully those install without issue. |
