SC 3.0 distributor options? can I eliminate CDI?

I've tried the search thing and can't seem to nail it down. is there any way to eliminate the cdi box on a 3.0. is there another distributor that will work that uses points/pertronix or something else? is there an MSD system that will work off the distributor without the cdi? it's an '82 3.0. any thoughts much appreciated. Don.

You don't say what you need to accomplish. The stock CDI system works great. If you have changed to carbs and can't use the stock vacuum system then you need to do something with the dizzy. The stock dizzy from a 78-79 will work. The one from your car 80-83 doesn't have enough mechanical advance without being modified. You can't use any other dizzy because it turns the wrong way compared to other 911 engines. MSD and other CDI systems will work just the same as the factory system. They can be used with any of the dizzy's mentioned above with the same modifications.

Yes, have one installed in my 80, very easy conversion all of the steps are in the archives here. You can get a MSD6 (no rev limit) or a 6AL with limiter, or seven series as well.

I use the Mallory hi-fire 6AL. It's cheaper than the MSD and has a selectable rev limiter. 179 from Summit racing. Any of these systems will work to replace your CDI.
