Couldn't agree more. And I agree there are fewer of them here than other era's just as in Australia.....and I imagine they will only get more rare. Many, many ofthem have been flared or parted out. To me, this can only mean they will go up in value later. Sure, perhaps not as much as oher era's but up they will go...eventually.......and more with the fewer of them there are.

I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones who had the valve guide issues on my '74 2.7.

Bought the plainjane '74 911 in 1985 (69K miles, interior very good, no rust body but paint showing it's age). Originally a CA car, no TRs, 11 blade fan but no external oil cooler. No PPI and had never heard of Bruce Anderson . Owned a '65 VW beetle and a '72 VW thing at the time and had to have the 911 when I saw it for sale. Just something about air cooled engines I guess and I always liked the look of the shorthoods for some reason.

However, after 4 years and 20K miles as a daily driver in the South TX heat, the valve guides were shot. (Smoked like a mosquito fogger on startup). Had Jones Autowerke in San Antonio do a complete rebuild in 1989. Carrera tensioners, case savers, replaced all exhaust valves, Euro S 7.5 P&C's, Turbatrol external oil cooler, etc, etc. The P&C's weren't necessary, just got a good deal on them so what the heck, while they were in there.....

18 years and nearly 60K miles later engine doesn't leak a drop and runs great and have never had any problems with the CIS. I had Jones adjust the valves 2 years ago and leakdown was 1% on all 6 cylinders. I quit daily driving many years ago as South TX heat and no A/C finally got to me.

If I added up all the receipts for the engine rebuild, metal-up repaint, etc. etc. spent over the last 22 years I am sure I have the $20K+ 911. Was it worth it?
Absolutely. As someone else posted, the sound coming from the 2.7 with a 20 year old Bursch muffler when you run it through the gears is music to the ear and certainly turns some heads.

I have no idea what the car would bring around here as S. TX is not exactly a Porsche hotbed but I have no intentions of selling it so it's a moot point. Maybe in another 20 years (when I'm 80.... ??) I'll think about giving it up.

I like mid-year cars, but I don't think I would pursue that one. Not that there's anything obviously wrong. Imo - mid year cars can be great deals. That said, don't buy one unless it's - yes - a great deal. For the kind of money you are willing to spend you can get into a SC. I think everyone here will agree that, for the most part, Porsche made better and better cars. I'm willing to admit that the 993 is better than my 964 after all. Therefore, I feel safe saying that the SC is a better car than the midyear w/o getting flamed too badly. Also, while I agree with Dan (who would be crazy to sell his car for 12K!) who says that one won't necessarily need to rebuild an original middy, I also agree with Randy that it is a probability.

Buy an SC. Classic and reliable.

My brother in law had a wonderful 74S, until he killed it at the kink at Road America. He now has another '74, but way too modified to be called a "middie".

I'll be in my usual position at Corner 5 with the other "Fence Jockeys". Looks like Boxster weather, as the '73 is going to Autobahn again on Monday.

Kidding side (mostly) I don't disagree with Bob. Porsche kept making better and better cars. In theory that means my galvanized '76 should be worth more than one of those rust prone Early car, right?! Bob, I actually DID get a PM from a Canadian Pelican yesterday asking about selling my car. He wanted "the link" to where its for sale. Of course I have not put it up for sale but at these prices that aregetting tossed around, if someone were truly serious I would be very tempted. You know what my car looks like and all the things I've done to it. But it is un-rebuilt so what DO you actually think its worth if I sold it. Not saying I will but i am tempted to find out what the opinions are. Carrera chain tensioners, new clutch/pressure plate, resurfaced flywheel. New dizzy, rebuilt fuel dizzy, new factory stainless plug wires, Turbo valve covers, new brakes, modern stereo with ipod interface, new upholstery, new paint in original color, new headliner, new carpet, re-wrapped steering, one of the Ebay upgraded trunk carpets. Al Reed polished 15x6's with new tires. Yellow euro tail lenses, early metal grill..can't think what else, but there is more. Oh, perfect but all black sunvisors, fiberglass repro door pockets when the carpet was done, foglight delete. Opinion? If I WERE selling it...where? Not here...fleabay?

Been there, almost done that - last weekend in fact. I blew the apex at the kink (I was thinking about how I just blew turn 5 and lost consentration ) and went wide at about a buck ten. I had to correct hard or kiss Katherine's wall. The guy behind me later told me I lifted the inside rear tire a few inches and did a "cool" drift. Thank God for R compound and the gas pedal!

Anywho, I will be there this Saturday. I'll likely be riding this-



I'll hang out some at turn 5 and turn 1. Give me a shout if you see me. I'll probably be the guy taking more pics of your car.

Dan, Yer killin me! You know I still love Mid year cars. But, aside from the lean lines, I like them because they are a good deal - usually. I guess I think it's crazy to sell your car for $12k because I know all the effort you've put into it. What is it worth on the open market? $12k might be it. I can't even remember for sure what I sold mine for - $10.5 I think, and it was pretty nice and had a rebuilt motor, new paint, Al Reed 16x7s, full suspension mods, etc. I would take it over the car posted as the topic. But, I bought mine more or less like that (I did the wheels and suspension) vs you who poured alot of effort into yours - hence my disbelief that you are selling. What's on the menu?

PS-I sold all of my 911s right here on Pelican classifieds.

Ash, the 74 911 looks great. What size wheels and tires are on it? I have a 76 911S narrow body and want to pull the tigger on a full set of wheels/tires replacing the stock cookie cutter 15x7's. many different opinion, but the consensus seems to be 16x6's all around on 205/55/16's. TX, JOHN

I'm not so sure about that. I would (and did) do 16x7 on all fours. Fits and looks much beefier.

I scanned the cover article from the 74 Road and Track. Best article on the 74’s I have ever seen (maybe the ONLY article HA! HA!). Only thing cooler than this coming with my car from the original owner was the Drivers Manual autographed by Dr. Porsche when he was at a US Rallye, and the Travel Parts Kit (NLA) still in the plastic cover bag with the Porsche factory sticker on it.

Thanks for the kind words. I was fortunate that the Chocolate Brown's original owner cared for the car as well as he did.

My car has the original 15/6 Fuchs that came with the car. I run Yokohama's 205/60/15 tires that I got from American/Discount Tire. I ran the same tire 195/65/15 on my 69 912. The tires are a designed sepcifically for Discount Tire. It is highly rated, quiet and I like the ride and feel. I don't Auto-X the car, just normal street highway conditions. I fin them to be a very good quality tire for a fair price.

Many on this board are much more knowledgeable than I regarding the "tire debates/preference" but these perform well and look great! I hear that Michellins, Kumho's and others also perform very well and are good looking as well. Like our car's the opinions vary so find something that fits your driving needs, price range.

Peter, YES, it feels way different than the "comfort" seats. My original plan was to have the seats redone with one of the plaids in the center and leaving the outside cork leather. Southbound Trimmers in England has the plaid material. I actually had them send me samples. The seats that I ended up getting from a fellow Pelican are in pretty good shape. I figured that I would wait awhile before redoing them.
