Anyone know the story behind this bug/chip shield?

I'm not to keen on putting "Bra" in the title - saw this on a 912 at Autofest this weekend:

Anyone know the owner, or know who might supply (or have supplied) these?

bippidy bump bump

Is there no more information than that out in Pelican Land? Surely someone rembers where these things came from (and now I'll stop calling you Shirley).

Byron - how old school are we talking here? 60's, 70's, went with the passing of the long hood?

It seems to me like a pretty sweet design. Possibly could be made to install and remove quickly, which would be great for road trips. If I can find somebody who still has one of these things around, I might try to talk them into letting me borrow it for a pattern to make a new one.
