67 to 68 Brake Caliper Interchange?

I know that 67 was the last year for single circuit brakes and then 68 went to dual circuit. Does anyone know if the brake calipers interchange? The calipers on my 67 parts car are rebuilt and in good shape, just wondering if I can use them on the 68. Visually both look identical.

Thanks

They should both be "M" calipers on the front with 3" mounting spacing. the rears are a go too.

Yes, they interchange. The wider spacing (3.5") didn't start until LWB '69 (911E and 911S).

The 'find' for SWB is the '67-'68 911S/911L (and Sportomaric) ventelated discs and calipers.

Best,
Grady

Let's say a person with a 68L swapped out their front end with an SC front end...what should they expect in re: to brake "performance"?

As w/ SC/Carrera there were 2 similar but not quite the same sets odf brakes used on MY67/68. They weren't year dependant though. They were model dependant.

base models used M(2x48) & L(2x35) calipers on 282x18 solid front and 290x18 solid rear rotors

S used M(2x48) & L(2x38) calipers on the familiar 282x20 vented front and 290x20 vented rear rotors. As happened later the caliper bodies were widened by inserting spacers between the body halfs.

As Grady said, The calipers and rotors are interchangeable. But if you have a set of normal and a set of S then change the caliper and rotor as a set, Besides the thicker rotors the S set up will have a bit more rear bias.

The change to dual circuit only involved the m/c and plumbing to it.

The M fronts use 3" axial mounting ears and the L rears 2.25" axial mounting ears

Bill,

There is another little piece of important trivia for the vented ’67-‘68. When the spacer was inserted in the caliper for the vented rotor, there is an additional spacer between the caliper and mount. This keeps the caliper centered on the thicker vented rotor. This spacer is in the shape of a “dog bone” and is half the thickness of the spacer between the two halves of the caliper.

All the ’68 Sportomatics have the vented brakes same as ’67 911S and’68 911L and 911S.

When I ordered my ’68 911 (normal) from Porsche in the winter of ’67-‘68, I ordered Koni shocks and sway bars. It came (free) with the vented brakes.

Best,
Grady
