antenna install problem on 71

Hi,

I'm putting my 71 back together after new paint and am having a problem installing a new Hirschmann antenna purchased from our host. It seems like the shaft isn't long enough to pick up the threads on the little nut that holds it all together. It's short by about an 1/8" or so.

I've got it in the right order and looked at the drawing someone did in an earlier thread to double check... I'm wondering if I need to grind down the little curved piece to make it come up higher in the hole... See photo.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Karl

Without seeing a photo of below fender assembly (to verify that the hole is in the correct location) your installation looks good. Would a gentle filing of the existing hole allow the antenna assembly to push further up thus allowing the top nut to grab the threads? If you do file please mask off all painted areas in case you slip. You could also grind the outside edges of the half moon shaped antenna piece since this is not structurally important and it would also allow the assembly to be pushed further up through the fender ( from what I can see in your photo). You are just going to have to fiddle with it until you can grab some threads. Once you have the top nut threaded it will all compress when tightening up the nut and the antenna will pull into position. Remember to raise the mast so you can tell that the antenna is indeed mounted at the correct angle. We are a Hirschmann dealer and we have installed lots of these antennas. Some go right in and others require a little fine tuning especially after bodywork and repaints (maybe some bondo skim coat or extra paint and clearcoat making the fender thicker then originally?).
Regards,
Charles

Karl,
My 71E is in the final stages of painting and I just dropped off my new Hirshmann antenna, purchased from our host. Let me know how you solved this problem and i'll let you know if i run into the same problem, etc.

PS...I'd modify the antenna base, rather than the fender.

regards,

al

Got it... I ended up grinding off the little sharp nubs (on top) plus another 1/8" of the aluminum curved mounting piece. Total removed was probably 3/16". Then, I had to "help" it seat up into the hole with a little assistance from a large socket and love taps from my hammer.

Thanks for the help.

Karl...
Now only 999 bits left to put back together!

Gratuitous new paint shot... (I'll post a complete paint start to finish post when I have it done)
