new "cheap" exhaust done......

the old muffler setup on my carrera was a few years old, here is it's original thread new custom homemade exhaust....pics

roninlb had stopped by on the way home from his big ride and convinced me that we needed something more tuned, and he was right.......again, as he always is
so a few months passed as i was aquiring some pieces and we are now about wrapped up.

so last week i was pulling out of a parking lot......bang.....it was a high curb and the bottom pipe hit it and it came off, no damage, luckily i held on the first system with a clamp and it just popped off and broke the strap.

so after some research for a "cheap" chambered muffler i found one for $60 at a "local to me" performance retailer, it is a Dynamax WLK-17676, turbo style muffler and 2.5", single in/out on one side.

we were in business.............
christian fabbed up a flange (pronounced "flan-j") F1 style, then we cut some mandrel bent tubing to connect the test pipe to the muffler, and the tailpipe.
it's not totally finished yet, i will be removing it for christian as he wants to clean up the welds, his tig welder is inop at the moment, after that i will be painting it with very high temp black paint.....or clear, the pipes are aluminized steel and will rust if not coated with something.

some pics

test pipe....

F1 style flange...

muffler, we welded to the factory bracket for easy removal..

i need to take a pic of the tailpipe.....it comes strait out of the muffler and angles down and back near the tip in the stock cutout.

and the sound.......man oh man it's nice, best sounding car i've ever owned. period.
i'll try to get a sound bite tomorrow

all in all i have about $200 plus our labor in it

I and my friend had Dynamax on none-p cars and always happy with them. Not too lound and the sound is very pleasure.
The muffler cost you $60. What make it up to $200? Couple pieces of piping cost $140?

Great post. I did some searching and found that muffler available at Summit for about $60. Do you have any sort of Cat on your system, or did you remove it?

yes.....so figure about $100 plus labor.
i would imagine it would sound the same just a bit quieter if the cat was in place, but right now with the test pipe it is very docile under normal driving, but mash the loud pedal and she growls nicely

sound clip coming by tonite

here you go.....i just ran around the block real quick, it has a very smooth sound which i don't think the camera picked up well, i'll have to have michelle stand out front and get an outside recording later.....so more to come.

Hey, it showed up that time. Sounds good bell... Be interesting to hear it from outside as well.

I was VERY surprised by this setup. I've always like the custom X-pipe I did for my 2 in 2 out on my car but never felt it had that real 911 sound. Brian's old system sounded like a cross between a V8 and a ricer. This one sounds like pure 911! I had the benefit of hearing him run it up and down the street a few times and it sound great, nice rumble at idle and a strong but not too loud performance sound when on the throttle. I actually only half joked about putting my late model exchangers back on as it sounded that good.

My car is down for the foreseeable future with a baby on the way and looking for a larger house. I plan to just work on the '73 which Brian's gonna help with and you can bet I'll be looking at the 2in 2 out dynomax muffler for it. I'm running dynomaxes on the X-pipe but the crossover changes the sound radically.

Another thing to note was that we added the tailpipe the next day, it's only about 14-16" long but makes a major difference in the sound from outside the car, really cleans it up. I've noticed this before on drag cars, a short tailpipe really helps with the noise level and tone versus just a tip or turndown out of the muffler.

As for the "F1" style flanges, well I was too lazy to program the CNC to make a triangle with rounded corners so just a G3 move and cut an ID, drilled the bolt holes then cut the OD and cleaned it up on the belt sander. Looks neat in person though.

BTW, that aluminized was a pain to weld. I could see contamination in the HAZ as I was welding it. When I did the tailpipe I sanded it off first. I'm gonna go over the whole thing with my tig torch when I get the leaking water hose fixed cause I'm not proud of the welds I got. Sure they'll hold but not pretty at all.

Sounds great!!

My Flo-Pro sounds very similar, burbley(sp) at idle, freakin' screaming at 6500.

I have a sound clip but I can't seem to send it to anyone successfully.

In 2003 I posted rave reviews about my Dynomax muffler. It's a true crossflow muffler (#17725). I sounds better than any muffler I've heard on a 911. Not loud or annoying, no resonance. But it lets that motor howl when you hit the high revs. I think I paid $85.

3.6 transplant exhaust report...

Glad to see others are discovering a great muffler.

Looks like a dynomax is in my future.... right after I go deaf dynoing my 3.4 with the M&K I will be fabbing a new muffler. Maybe I will even do some back to back dyno runs.....

Cheers

Who can recommend a shop in Los Angeles/Long beach/Torrance that can set me up with a Dynomax replacement exhaust for my bone dry stock 74 911? I currently have a stock exhaust and want to replace it.

Thanks in advance.
