JMPRO Armrest Install - Nice work JMPRO!

Recently, there was a thread about some armrests for the center of seats being on sale at JC Whitney. I was about to buy one when JMPRO made the offer on that thread that he had a couple of his left. The deal was VERY good and I think I got the last one.

Well, I needed a little brak tonight from work, and instead of eating, I decided to install this thing. It mounts in place of the shift coupler access panel. I will let the pictures tell most of the story and naswer any questions later, or JMPRO may want o chime in. The install does require a very slight mod to the hole that the screws attach too on the tunnel. You have to flatten the area just a tad, but I did not think it was a big deal. The other mark it leaves are three slight holes in the carpet that goes over the tranny tunnel. Again, no big deal to me as I will need to replace my carpet in the next year or two anyway.

Let me take a minute to give BIG kudos to JMPRO for a very well thought-out design. It looks good, is very functional, and is easy to install or remove. The main sectio can come out of the floor mount if you had a track day or just did not want it in for awhile. The whole thing comes out of the floor mount with 2 alan screws.

JMPRO< I have a couple of ideas if you are ever interested in doing these again. Email me sometime if you want to hear them. Just a couple of minor things.

The only thing I slightly dislike is the rubber Shift boot-ish sleeve that covers it from the floor to the armrest mount. I am going to look into having a leather piece made to replace this.

Anyway, JMPRO, once again, very nice work!

Here are the pics...

Whatever dude... My car is driven a lot. I have a 2 hour drive to and from work, and I usually drive it 2-3 times a week there, plus excursions when offtime allows... I realize maybe you were joking, but there is nothing wrong with a freakin armrest... in fact, it makes driving long hauls much more pleasant... This is a very nice design in that it is avery simple to install and remove for those times you wish not to have an armrest. Oh, and I only need one, by the way.

Now then, I need to figrue out where to put the cupholders...

Thanks for posting. Looks like a fairly unobtrusive install. Glad your liking it.

When I had mine installed, I removed the accordion rubber boot thing cause I liked the black crinkle finish.

Yeah, I was thinking about that myself. Just drove home and my first impression is I like it there, but I wish I could adjust the height on it. Still a very nice design overall.

It is a well thought out design.

If I used my 911 for a daily driver and had to commute I could see a definite advantage to having an armrest and a cup holder. One thing you don't want to do is be driving to work in the morning with hot coffee between your legs.

Whoa there... I'll give him "well thought out concept" but c'mon... the devil is in the details. That accordion tube with a metal ring... not exactly a nice interior detail. ..well, unless it's the interior of the back of a plumbers truck.

Oki-dokee. Concept if you wish. I'll admit the cosmetic design could be improved upon. You have to admit for ease of installation, variety of applicable year models and reversibility he gets good marks.

I still like my JC Whitney unit a lot better.

It is incredibly inexpensive. Less than $15.

Will friction fit in place; no screws into the car. Installs in 4 seconds.

Holds stuff, like a bottle of water inside. Can also, with the lid open, put in a coffee cup.

For those that pm'ed me ,sorry that was the last one. I too had second thoughts about the rubber sleeve when designing the final part but thought, shoot, there is a rubber boot on the shift lever, a rubber boot on the heater lever, a rubber boot on the seat belt , so a rubber boot on the armrest post went right along with the rest of it. It can be removed quite easly to reveal a powder coated finish underneath.
And Island 911, what can I say . Your friends and family must be thrilled to be around you at christmas or other get togethers. Kind of like being around Cliff from Cheers, always an answer or an opinion about everything.

Absolutely! Like I said, good concept.

JMPRO, just so you know, product development is what I do. I'm a mechanical egr working with talented Industrial Designers. Often those Industrial Designers are making similar comments of my designs. I don't take it personally. --Architects have interior designers; Framers have finishers, and so on.

I get the design language you were going for (the black rubber theme). But the pleating on the shifter reflects the motion of the shifter. I cant imagine that armrest is something that has the same DOF (degrees of freedom) as the shifter. THat is, a highly pleated accordion tube 'says' 6 DOF to me. (the shifter is 2-DOF)

I'll give you some free advice. ---What I think an ID guy would say: Finish the design with the design language of the seats and (visually) soft interior (not the e-brake and shifter) Reason being, it functions with/for the seats ... it's highly visible, a touch point and intended to support the human body. --Leather, vinyl and carpeting should be the choices.

If the above advice offends you, I'll call you at Christmas . . . we can get together. You must be a real cranky thrill then too! -LOL

Quite frankly this is why I don't consult with any one on any of my parts, too many pepole with thier opinions about what it should be. Its all a mute point because that arm rest was discontinued a few years ago. The ones I gave away were the only ones left and I hoped someone would put them to good use.

I think Island911's comments are pretty constructive. In fact, I'm surprised, given the accordian appearance, that the arm does not articulate.

But, this is all mute, given that JMPro is not making them any more.

Yup, I quite agree. I do have a cup holder so maybe I'll just shut up - or get an arm rest. They do look quite good.
