I know now why I don't like the Cayman
Well, actually, I do like the Cayman, but I think the design is off a little.
The major thing I now see is the roof line: http://files.porsche.com/filestore.a...iletype=normal Can someone with good photoshop skills flatten the bulge in the roof and maybe extend the rear window area back a fraction? I know that will result in a more 911 looking roof line, but why depart from a classic if you can't improve it? The bottom half of the Cayman speaks for itself and speaks well. |
yeah, a 911 shape for the 1/4 glass would be good. or get rid of it altogether.

Pshop skills are a little rusty, but here you go, with a tail even.

Damn, do you see what I mean??
BTW, I KNOW I was on the Boxster forum when I hit the new thread button because my first attempt to post this went in as a reply to a Boxster seat belt question (my fault). But when I finally got a new thread started, it shows up here. I don't even care anymore. If people think I'm an idiot or OT, screw 'em. I was on the other board. |
I'm certainly glad this thread is about design subtlties and not about performance...with respect to the posters.
Those that spend time on the track know how these cars perform. |
Pull that rear window back just a wee bit more so that there's no break in the line to the tail lights, please. Then, I think you gots a hot rod mid engine car.

Different theory - let's see what happens when we decrease the overhang, then please, can we get rid of the spoiler-ette?
I love the shape of the Cayman - I hope someday to be able to afford one. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1190943566.jpg |
It's lookin' like a 356 there and that's not all bad. Still, I like where it was going.
Next, we have to overhaul the front grilles a little. Get rid of the silly lights in the bars. |
I have to agree about the bulgey top. I thought I was the only one that didn't like it. No argument on the performance/driveability.

You know, I don't really like the look of the Cayman either. I wanted to, but its just ok to me.
And, while I am at it, I think the Boxster is far better looking, more fun (open top), and the better value by a considerable margin. To me the Cayman is a no go. Mike |
The roofline is lower because there is no back seat. I prefer the mid-engine, but a sunroof would be a nice option in the Cayman.
I now have a Boxster, and I think it's great value. Excellent. |
At first, I went wild on the Cayman. Fresh design, tart, mid engined, a new kid persona...
After some time looking, researching, and driving both a 997 and Cayman (not that I could afford either new), I said to myself: would you purchase a new Cayman or a used 997 coupe for roughly the same dough? When the Cayman was introduced, there was much ado about the Cayman's mid engine balance, performance and "value" v. the 997 and would this contrast possibly impact 997 sales or worse, make the 997 marginal? Guess what? A new Cayman is great and wonderful but a pre owned 997 would be my selection no matter what, regardless of the mid engine v. rear engine debate. A 997 is a 911 and you can't take that back... 87 blk coupe |

Will it, could it cannibalize the 997? Well then, they better get crackin' on the 997. It shouldn't ever be that there is a number one a number two. These are separate cars. However, as the 997 heads off to become the penultimate in touring cars, the Cayman and it's brethren could very well be the new "old" 911. Taildragger hardcores will not be pleased. BUT, the Panamera is coming and that seals the deal for me is will invariably take the 997 vision in that direction. Lets now look to the smaller one with that crazy 914 mid engine layout and see if that just might become the new sports car. But, as a bunch of hacks at the keyboard, let's redesign the thing so people can't say no to it. Anyone wanna work over the bar lights in front? |

Here's the 'City' version.
