914/6 but feel 4 is the same for this issue. Had engine out and didn't protevt cv joint and ball bearings came out. Last time I tried reassembly on theseyears ago I failed but am determined to get this back together,
1, Can it be done in the car
2. Help me with a way to get it back together.
3. If axle must come out brakes won't hold hub set to break loose.

I have been to a CV repair facility.
The workers there had on white overalls, gloves and masks.
You could have done open heart surgery on the table where they re-assembled the CV joints.
I was told that every precaution was taken to keep dirt out of the assy as it was sealed.
I admit it was total overkill, but the joints I received from them did not fail in over 250,000 miles of the vehicle that they went in to.
To the best of my knowledge, the vehicle is still running.
Now, if you want to assemble yours in your garage, dust flying, cigarette ash included, go ahead.
They will probably get you all the way around the block, unless it's a long block.

Terry,

Were inner CV-joints the only ones that fell apart?

CV joint disassembly

The above info is probably what was missing from the last adventure in 'Lobro-land' ...

If worn enough to fall apart when dangling, all you will need is to remove the snap ring and the inner race should slide off the axle easily, or with a bit of plastic mallet help.

I reassemble mine on the dining table, after all traces of solvents are evaporated. The dining table gets a fresh cleanroom set of fresh newspapers! Fresh Valvoline SynPower Synthetic grease with moly #985 or #986 ... hopefully is confined to the newspapers and Lobros!

Good luck!

I did both inner and outer with axle still on the car. Outer CV was removed and cleaned and in one day I had both repacked with new boots, clamps, bolts etc. It was messy and a royal PITA but for $50 I'll easily get 50K out of it. The key is good clean axle bolts with proper torque. After 400 miles Mine are still in place as I instaleld them.

No.

2. Help me with a way to get it back together.

A search here should find you instructions and several tips.

3. If axle must come out brakes won't hold hub set to break loose.

Use PB Rust Inhibitor and moderate heat to help get the bolts loose.

Once out and on a clean work bench, repairs can be accomplished. You do NOT need a 'hospital environment, just clean everything throughly, apply new grease and new seals/boots and you will be OK.

Jeff:
The repair facility was in Mississauga Ontario, back in the early 90's.
I moved out to Vancouver about 9 years ago, so I cant say if the place is still there.
They did all sorts of race type work, engines, transmissions, and various other parts.
I believe some of the things in the shop were for the aviation industry as well.
The name was Woolfe Engineering or something like that.
I was in Traco Engineering once, a long time ago.
They built race engines in a sterile environment, so clean in fact that all you could see was through a glass window.
It was like looking at new-born babies through the glass!
An old mechanic friend once told me.."If you are not willing to lick it, it's not clean enough" , good advice, you don't really have to lick it, but if you were in doubt, clean it again.

Do not fear...

I did my CV joints on the garage floor. It was really, really, messy.
I had on jeans, an old t-shirt, no gloves, and no mask. It was 100+ degrees, and I was sweatin like a monkey. Then again, I wasn't rebuilding them in my kid's sand box either.
No clean suit and mask here. I was filthy by the time I got done.
I made sure all obvious dirt was excluded. Nothing bigger than cigarette ashes and small squirrels at the least.
You know, race pads and torn boots = oodles of brake dust being ingested. I’m sure the joints were cleaner when I finished than when I started.
I got confused on one CV joint, and had to put the balls back as best I could recall.
I have several thousand solid track miles on the shafts. They make no noise, and nothing bad has happened.
I saved a bundle of money repacking and re-booting the joints.
