Slant Nose Mechanisms 930 same as ?

I have heard the Slant nose mechanisms on the 911/930 are the same as a 924/944. I have also heard they were the same as the 928. Would anyone know off hand which are interchangable? Mine was changed out years ago to regular fenders & I want to go back to original, just have to get all the parts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

no they are all 3 similar but not the same. when I swapped mine over to a slant I wanted to make as close to factory as possible. the car came with a spare set of steel slant fenders, and mazda linkage. So after looking a a factory slant and seeing the very close similarity of the linkagesI bought a full set of 944 linkage lights and motor. the motor is the same. the light buckets are simiilar but a different size. I would have been better off tossing the fenders and buying a whole set from a wrecked slant nose. So IF you decide to convert back ..wait until you see a complete set up on e bay or someplace. then buy it. wait for the whole thing you see fenders fairly often and someitmes the whole set up. but you NEVER see individual parts. and when they are selling the whole set up they are never willing to sell just parts. I looked for the linkage parts for almost 2 years before giving up.

I bought a set of Slant fenders. The funny thing is they have the OEM #'s but it also has an actual bucket that seals off, save the 2 holes in the bottom for wiring, the rest of the headlight from the fender well. As I studied them, they have the Mazda RX7 motor set up. I know that many had been set up with the Mazda or Denso motors, but is the Mechanism Mazda as well?

Ken911 09-30-2007 04:05 AM

not sure if the mechanism is the same or custom made for it does yours have the round or square lights?

Akila 09-30-2007 10:35 AM

Round lights, looks like 2nd generation RX7 motors. I would guess these are RX7 mechanisms as well?

your best bet is install them it could be several years before you are able to find a factory set up. Really not that hard once you figure out the wiring and how to hook up the relays etc. I set mine up so that the first click on the headlight swtch opens the light buckets and the second click actually turns on the headlight. that way you can open them to change bulbs or clean them without having them lit. I found the headlight wiring schematic for a mazda online after that it was fairly easy to figure out. I think someone from rennlist e mailed me the link, i'll look when I get home.

Ken, if you could post that it would be a huge help. I'm having trouble with my slant/mazda setup, and haven't made much progress on finding the problem.

Ken, I would also like to see your wiring schematic. Question, are these the Mechanisms from the Mazda as well?

Ken911 09-30-2007 05:03 PM

yes I couldnt find the link to the page with the schematic I'll have to look for it . basically you have 4 wires to each bucket. a ground a 12v to the battery then 2 12v lines to the relay one is energise to open the other is energise to close. I tested each one out of the car by hooking the wires to a battery charger to verify I had it right. I installed a relay in the front trunk that has the energise to close connected to the parking lights. so that the first click opens them up then the second click turns them on. I might have found the schematic doing a google search for mazda lights. or rx-7 wiring schematics

If I'm reading you correctly then what you have are probably factory fenders w/the Mazda headlight units. These were probably sold through Alan Johnson Racing back in the 80's.

My 930 has these and it was my understanding that they were sold this way as part of a conversion package offered by AJR. You could have also opted for the single motor mechanism from the 944 or 928 which ran a few more dollars.

To me, the biggest value is in the fenders.. they're factory stamped units. The Mazda motors, while non factory ar very simple units and easily replaced.

It's a lot of work to find all the correct pieces and install the factory set-up single motor set-up... I haven't really seen any on "sleezebay" and most that I've seen wrecked have been smacked in the front.

Nice to know where these came from. I will be running the Mazda setup. It does as you say look simple. I actually just bought another set of RX assemblies for parts, since a few were missing on my fenders. They seem more self contained & as long as they work, I'm good. But, as I have asked not recieved answers to. Are these Mechanisms Mazda?

Mazda motors were used by many aftermarket fabricators. The lift mechanisms were typically custom made. To my knowledge all have a some level of shake when up and driving.

I fixed the shake issue there is a cross bar that the lights pivot on the bollts to the fender in two sockets. one of which was missing on mine and I had to fab my own. ANy way this bar is held inplace by two socket head cap screws acting as set screws. this allows them to vibrate going down the road. I took the two set screws and ground the ends to sharp points. I then tightened them down enouch to dent the bars, pulled the bars back out the drilled them enough to make a divot in the tube and reinstalled with the set screws VERY tight, this stopped the vibration. Oh and I havent found the print out i made for the mazda wiring been working 12 hour shifts 6 days a week. I'm off friday I'll look for them again then.

oh and the steel fenders are not always factory fenders. If you look underneatht them they are usuall stock fenders that had the bulges cut off and a semi flat section welded in with the louvers and the hole for the lights. the hole is very close but not exactly the same as the stock ones. if they are after market the section where the louvers is installed is NOT galvenaized on the underside.

Akila 10-02-2007 09:22 AM

This may explain all.

your linkages are much different from mine and those are definately not factory steel fenders. I like the way yours is set up much better

onboost 10-02-2007 12:11 PM

Ken,

Most of the steel fenders are not factory which is exactly the point I was making. There are some out there that are..but still did not use the factory light mechanism.

You are correct in that the tops of most fenders were cut-out and and a flat section with louvers and light bucket welded in. I did that to a 77 turbo I had (w/spare set of fenders). Typically if you run your hand underneath... you can feel, or if the car is on a lift with a wheel off, you can see the seam where slant insert was welded and hopefully sealed.

I've also owned a late Turbo w/ factory slant option and now my current 930 w/AJR conversion that used factory fenders with Mazda lights. Both had/have stamped galvanized fenders.

Ken911 10-02-2007 01:21 PM

mine are the welded ones the louvered section isn't galvanized but you couldn't tell until i had stripped them for painting So I re coated the underside with that wurth bare metal anti rust paint similar to the por 15. then it went for the regular primer/undercoating etc. that the fenders normally get. the holes are slightly different from the stock holes so they couldn't be adapted to the stock linkage the difference was about 4 mm or so just enough to not fit but not enough to tell without measuring. the ones picture above are even better they keep the mud out of the back of the lights, I am still trying to figure out how to make some sort of fender liner that looks decent but is still functional and doesn't weigh a ton. The stock fender liners are also NLA
