HELP: Shift pattern backwards

I have a 69 911 with a four speed and the shift pattern is backwards. 4th is were 1st should be and 1st is were 4th should be and so on. I just got the car so I don't know why is it like this. Anyone have any ideas. Can the gear set be put in backwards?

Polandbreeder,

If I understand correctly, you've got 4th in the forward left position and 1st on the right rear position. Is this correct?
I was thinking this reversal could be achieved if a rod was rigidly mounted in the shift bushing cup and replaced the shifter. Could you post a pic of the shifter? Does anything look non-stock?
Where is reverse hiding?

I've never been inside the transmission case, so I can't comment on the possibility of gearsets in the wrong places. Seems unlikely, though.

I think the shifter might have been changed. I attached some pictures. Reverse is all the way to the right then either rear or forward position. I was too confused by it to remember. Is there a way to fix this with out buying a whole new complete shifter kit. How can I tell if it is a 914 transmission?

I'll defer to JW for real assistance (since you're evidently not a troll), but I do like those driving shoes !

That is a VW beetle "Hurst" style shifter (with an adapter plate), VW shift rod head, and VW shift rod bushing bracket!

Although it is a strange setup, it should not change the shift pattern.

I notice there is no bushing around the shift rod. What could be happening is that the rod is so loose that it is following the lateral motion of the shifter rather than rotating in the opposite direction.

To change to a 911 shifter, you will also have to replace your shift rod with a proper 911 unit, which means removing the engine and transmission.

I need to quit buying projects other people have gave up on. I was looking at the rod and it seems like whoever had the car last cut the original shifting rod about 8 inches back and used a heater hose clamp to put the vw shift rod head on. This car is a mess, but my driving shoes are cool .

You can put the original shift rod back in using the hand brake opening.
Remove the 3 bolts of the handbrake and move it to the side and slide the rod in. Is tight but possible. Did it at the racetrack the other weekend.

Is this right? When I move the shifter lever forward the rod moves into the transmission, when I move the lever back in comes out, and when I move the lever left towards the driver the rod moves right….. Is that how it is suppose to be? I have been jacking with it all day. If it was a 914 transmission wouldn’t I have 4 reverse gears and one forward?

You have a VW Type 4 transmission. This is a very rare gearbox from a model that was a complete sales flop. Parts for that gearbox are nonexistant.
