RSR your thoughts

I found an interesting car this past week end. the car is 1968 911 with an all steel conversion to RSR.(except for the bumpers) the front pan has been changed (nicely done) and the rest of the car is pretty solid. It has a small 2.0L engine and the interior is in decent shape.

Is not going to be for me but for some people in Mexico that want to race it on their vintage series(very competitive sometimes 40 cars show up)

I have a couple of questions

1. can this car be converted to a long wheel base? Is this done by changing the rear banana arms?

2. the owner is asking 10.5K what do you think of this price? my plan is to finish the conversion and add a bigger engine 3.0 or 3.2 and send it down to Mexico to race on their vintage series

Let me know you thoughts

Well, here's one opinion:

1. If you changed the entire rear suspension to 1969 or later, then your extended wheelbase would have the wheels too far back in the rear openings. Still more work. Not sure you can match up the axles properly either.
So, I would not do that.

1a. Lots of racers actually prefer the SWB chassi in the smaller displacement classes, from what I have seen.

2. It's buyer beware when buying someone elses much modified 911. Is it beauty or the beast? What is hidden underneath all the plastic RSR stuff? If it is a 1968, it may well have been a 912, for example, to start with. That was a huge year for 912's in the US.

Best of luck, post some pictures and others here will give you more to go on..

I did check the numbers and it is a 911.

Here are some pictures, though they are small

That is weird. I have seen this car - the very same pics somewhere before. I wonder if he had it for sale on line somewhere. It has been a few months ago it seems...

Yeah, I remember this was posted maybe a month ago. I remember I read it at work, and that only started beginning of September...the post said the guy had just picked it up, and although it didn't say what he paid, $9900 was clearly applied to the windscreen.

you will need
1) torsion tube from a later car- see if you can find 73-86. They are slightly thicker and have the center support on the tunnel
2) add additional support from the tube to the tub- its going to be a race car and you have just welded in a replacement tube
3) get the spring plates, rear arms from a 74-89- with the nod going towards the 84-89 as they USUALLY have less mileage and you can start with decent rear brakes
4) You will need a later front suspension to match the rear
5) the shocks: The swb used a small tube shock and this will be marginal given its intended use, as well as not matching to the aluminum arms. Either cut out the shock bridge between the frame rails and install a 74-89 . OR use late shocks , 72-89, with the dust cover cut way back so just the rubber stop is showing. cut back the aluminum arm lower mount about an inch . Why? to get close to the correct shock angle on the arm to body using the swb oe shock bridge. You may still need to use a porta power to swedge open the bridge shock tubes for clearance
6) convert the car over to dual circuit brakes- again from the donor later chassis 74-76
7) now you get to remove the flares and reweld them in the correct position. Always do this with the motor/trans in the car at desired ride height
8) mod the bumper to match

with the work i have seen you do on your other cars, this will be a breeze. lotsa hours but not difficult to do
