1971 911 Door Pockets Restored - Wow!!

Like many of you early 911 owners, my door pockets were warped, cracked, faded, trim missing, etc. Very ugly.

I sent the pair to Tony Garcia of Autobahn Interiors in San Diego for a restoration (re-shaping, re-vinyl, new horizontal and vertical reproduction trim pieces) and just got them back this morning. I am shocked! They look brand new!!

Tony charges $300 for the pair (more if they are very heavily damaged).

Tony did mine a couple years ago and did a fantastic job. The new trim must be a recent development. Can you please compare the repro vs. original? My driver-side trim is in pretty rough shape. If the repro stuff is faithful to original, I will buy.

Tony found this version of the trim just a few weeks ago. On close inspection, I think it is plastic rather than aluminum trim -- but it takes a close inspection of the ends (not visible when installed on the car) to notice. I suggested that he keep looking for aluminum trim to satisfy the really picky amongst you.

Al,
My '71E is my only car, daily driver, and is in really nice shape. I've been doing a rolling restoration on it these past few years, improving things as I have the opportunity to take it off the road for a week or two (read all about it here on the 911E Registry site.

Here is a pic of my targa in Durango Colorado last July on the 'Tour de Colorado'

After I finish cleaning my door panel parts and re-install everything, I'll take a pic of the interior.

Cheers!
Scott

The trim is a plastic, rubberized trim piece that has integrated glue on the inside. I used these about four years ago on the center sections of the BMW grilles (it was something that you can buy on eBay to put on the front of your BMW grille to "chrome" it out). The concours guys would rebel against this, but for 99% of the people out there, this looks great! I'm not sure how long these would last, but I'm pretty sure you can buy that plastic, chrome-colored trim strips at any good upholstery store these days. Maybe even your local auto parts store. Hmm, I suppose that we should start carrying it.

I've been thinking that when I get around to putting the interior back in my car, I would go with RS America door panels, and forget about the pockets, even though mine aren't that bad.

I may have to re-think that. Looks fantastic.

Scott, those look fantastic! Congrats and I know they feel good too. My father just purchased a complete longhood interior resto from Tony and when it came back, I was stunned by how nice the pockets were. Wanting to save the money, I restored mine myself and they look really nice - not Tony's quality, but nice nonetheless. I even had holes in the map pockets from speakers and patched those up nicely. The only thing I did not do was reflock the inside. I will do that at a later date as I wanted to get them back on the car. The other struggle is with the Al trim. One side is scratched pretty bad from pliers used by a PO, so they will require more work. Anyway they turned out darned nice with a little effort and patience.

Enjoy your new pockets - will make your car drive nicer!
