Starter R&R on G50 car

Will be R and R starter on my G50 equipped '88. Bentley Manual directs a partial tranny drop to get it done. Anyone care to share experiences doing a stater change out on a G50 car?
Thanks in advance for any time/hassles you can save me!!!

I just did a search last night on this same exact topic. Use the search button on the upper right part of your screen. It is your friend.

I use the search tool alot - just didn't find much info on G50 cars - I understand the "challenge" is a bit different. Will probably do the partial engine drop.

after 2 days of wrestling under the car, I had to let the tranny down couple inches to swap it. Very tight space up there.

Same here...I put off doing a parrtial drop as well and that was a huge mistake. Job went dramatically faster after a partial drop. Although, now that I think about it I could not find information anywhere at a G50 specific partial drop. I just undid the tranny bolts with the tranny on a jack and lowered it. My concern was how far was safe...I did not know what to check. Another tip is to remove the 4 small bolts holding the carrier to the transmission. This is helpful when you reinstall the tranny since the 2 huge bolts that actually hold up the tranny need some wiggle room and leaving the 4 smaller bolts loose allows for this. It will be clear when you get under there and take a look.

Good Luck

Hi Buck- this is the thread I have been looking for- i thought I had searched well enough but this is what I needed. Were there any other things you needed to disconnect other than the six ones listed? Also, how many inches down do you think you let the transmission go? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I ended up doing the partial "tranny" drop as described in the Bentley Manual. Loosening the four bolts that attach the mount to the trans was a help. I think I lowered the front of the trans a total of six inches. With that done, the rest is a breeze (was one of those really greasy/dirty jobs!!).

Disconnect the connector at the front of the tranny which is for the shifter. This is kind of a PITA since you have to get the shaft and the holder apart. I used a pair of pliers and to slowly separate them. The good thing is it goes back together only one way and there's no way to screw it up. I got at least 4 inches of drop, maybe 6 but got worried after that. It's hard to tell what is being stressed with all the connections on the engine near the firewall. Make sure and disconnect the ground strap and the heater hoses. Since I could not find an article on it I just looked around and tried to disconnect anything that looked like it might be an issue but IIRC, there was not a whole lot I had to bother with. It was surprsingly easy but I was not really comfortable.
Good Luck
