1983 Porsche 911 SC -- here's my pic, and questions for you guys

Hi,
I just inherited a 1983 Porsche 911 SC -- guess praising it to my granddad paid off! It's got a five speed and a six cylinder engine. It was owned by an engineer (my grandfather) and it's been cared for impeccably (79k miles). I've always wanted a 911, but this one's twitchy on the S-curves! Does anyone have any advice on whether to keep this one or get a later one, or different one? I want to know a. are there better handling 911s? b. will it cost me a bundle to keep this up? (I'm a student.)

very nice. let me have it for free. he he he... jk - i would keep it with that 79k low miles. it can go another 79k with no rebuild required. of course with proper care and maintenance.

anyway, congratulations. great car. turbo tie rods will help that twitchy feeling. buy one here. pelican supplies it. good luck.

FREE???????????? KEEP IT!!!!!!!!!!! You could sink $10K into that and still be money ahead. It looks beautiful to begin with. BTW, it has a Carrera front valence (1984^). It looks like it might be RoW. Do you have a shot of the rear?

Get it aligned. That should help. Tire pressure is v. important.

It's been lowered (good thing), but if it hasn't had a bump steer kit installed it can be 'twitchy' on road irregularities.

Don't think turbo tie rods will help this. Do other stuff first.

nice. ive got an 83. i love it. what do you mean twitchy? the front end seems to get a little "unsure" on sharp, high speed turns when the fuel is low, otherwise mine sticks like glue. as for costing a bundle...my VW when i was a student nearly bankrupted me. keep the car and have fun

You don't say where you are. But assuming you live near a large city I would suggest you contact Porsche Club of America, find your local chapter and attend one of their events as a observer. Talk to the old guys there and they will look over the car and tell you if you have major problems coming. I can think of worst things than having a Porsche as a student. I would hope you would attend a HPDC (high performance driving clinic) and learn its limits. Your grandfather did you a favor, don't sell it until you understand what you own. If you are sissy, well then ..........

There are 10,000,000,000 people out there that would love to be in your shoes. Don't get rid of the car but, to answer some of your questions.

a. 911's handle great, something is wrong if it doesn't handle correctly. As suggested, get it aligned and check the tire presssure (I believe it's 29 front and 34 rear) When it's on the alignment rack, the technician will be able to check tie rod ends, shocks, bushings etc.

b. They are not cheap to maintain but, you're money ahead as the car is valuable. Start reading everything you can get your hand on regarding maintenance. Buy the 101 book from Pelican. For the most part, if it's been properly maintained, you can do oil changes, learn to adjust valves and other maintenance items. Some of the more complicated tasks may require a professional mechanic.

FINALLY.,,,, where do you live as many members on this and other boards will gladly lend a hand turning a wrench or giving advice.

super sweet car! You have to keep that one. With very little $ in maintanence that could have lots of fun for another 100K miles

HAHAHA!! No, No, NO! YOU'RE twitchy on the S-curves! You've got a genyoowine Porsche - now your challenge is to understand the dynamics of the rear biased weight characteristic of the car and LEARN TO DRIVE IT!

If you rise to this challenge and learn how to drive it, you may still want a later model Porsche, - but it will not be as demanding and rewarding as your SC.

Cheers,

David

Is this your first car? You say student but you don't mention College or HS? I may get flamed away for this but you should be aware that most everyone balls up their first car and it would be a crying shame for you to do that to such a nice example.

I'm not saying get rid of it, quite the contrary, I'm just mentioning you should be aware of what you have there and realize that through inexperience & bravado some of us tend to do silly things. Lots of us (myself included) did those silly things in an old POS, not nearly as heartbreaking

Good luck with it, don't get rid of it, beautiful SC there!
