Substitute panel for center rear reflector
Does anybody make a substitute panel for the center reflector. This is for an 84 Carrera. Not real wild about the black script and the clears are $650. I would prefer that I just be able to replace with a fiberglass part and paint. Would look nice with R lights also.
I thought Getty made one but could not find on their site. Would be a pretty easy part to make. -Jeff

I agree. A body-color panel on the mid-years cars would look very nice with R lights. So, I have the same question as No Lift.

I'm interested also. How hard would it be to paint the one on your car to your body color. I'm thinking it might flake off after a while in the weather?. I noticed a small amount of flaking on the inside of the pane., and I tried to paint it the same color, flat gray, but when it shows up in the light, you can see the difference. What do your think?

Looks like RUF painted the reflector - if prepped correctly I am sure it would stay. I am guessing etching it? The rear section of the car is probably the best spot as it really see's nothing it needs to be durable for.
I can certainly paint the one of have but...it is in great shape, and not damaged. New ones are so pricey it seems like a waste. I found a post from Jack a while back about GT racing making a fiberglass one but never found it on the site. Sameer has one on his RUF - looks like they left the two reflectors on each side non-painted. Looks pretty slick in my opinion. I think the black Porsche letters look rather gaudy and I would rather not advertise for them. -Jeff

I wouldn't paint an "original" piece to be body color....seeing new replacements are going for over $600.

I think it ok if you sand the reflector then use a primer before painting it

Yes, the new ones are very pricey. I also dont want to advertise PORSHCE on the back. The body colored ones look great, and painting mine would be easy. But, you know the original ones, when you look at them in the light, seen to reflect light in different directions, and they look " broken up", as far as reflection's go. Did Porsche use a special kind of reflective paint on the inside of ther reflecters?

yes......special reflective paint for that kind of panel..not just exclusive to Porsche.

 Sounds like a lot of drama in finding a suitable piece of plastic, figuring out a way to mount it and then selling my old vs. dropping mine off at my painter. Incidentally, the black lettered ones are not NLA - Pelican sells them now and for a brand new one, in the box, never used, for $450 on eBay: Item number: 4594218686 I know there is some Porsche unobtanium out there but this Bosch piece of plastic does not qualify IMO. Just my 02. -Jeff

Depending on the color of your car, you might be able to stick some self adhesive vinyl over the reflector. Then if you wanted to return it to original, you could peel it off.

You know, I've been thinking a while, ( yea it' s struggle sometimes), but I just might find a kind of tape that is a really good tight fit, and just paint it the same body color. It might not be noticabale from 5 feet. Then, just take the the tape off and the piece is just like new.

I guess that's my point.... this is an intrinsically low value piece that magically has become high market value...because of it's rarity...
Realizing this...why would anyone paint it over and not capitalize on its market value??? Maybe I don't get it. It can't be THAT difficult to find a (truly) inexpensive plastic piece to mount and paint....would it? Wil

Oh, and just for the sake of Photoshop manipulation...
 And to this: ...interesting, but I really think the bling bling RUF rear bumper kit with all its "air slits" visually drowns out any improvements the body-colored panel could render.
