Intake manifold torque. newb
87 42k. Finally got around to torquing barrel nuts and adding wave washers. Nuts were all loose and engine idles smoother now. When removing the air filter housing is it easier to leave the MAF attached and remove then both as one unit? I will have to remove this again to replace my a/c hoses and sound pad.

air filter housing comes off easily without bringing the MAF with it... there are nuts inside and outside... take care to disconnect the ALL the hoses from the back and then remember to reconnect them...there is a hose with one of those squeeze clips... if you take off the hoses that go to the right you might label them...
btw - no harm in removing the MAF come to think of it... if you are working in there could be a good idea to give you more room and maybe less chance of damage to the MAF.. the MAF comes off in about 1 minute. |

Nothing wrong with removing the MAF. Good opportunity to make sure the barn door inside is swinging cleanly.
Like hcoles said, be sure to check for ALL the nylock nuts that hold the airbox to the intake manifold. There's one inside the box that people typically overlook and then crack the box when trying to wrestle it free. Also note that the oil tank hoses behind the air box pass through a plastic bracket that is screwed to the airbox rear side. You don't need to disconnect the hoses- just remove the two screws holding the bracket to the airbox.
