what is this bit?

There is a plastic flask that sits on top of the washer bottle - seems to have a couple of vacuum type lines on it.
What does it do?

Its part of the fuel tank ventilation system - often the rubber lines split and you get a fuel smell from under that fender.

Thanks, that makes sense. I was concerned it may have been part of the vacuum system - mine had a broken line.

Yep. what jevvy said. That is the fuel tank expansion tank. It collects a boatload of road debris around it, doesn't it?
