Vandals Strike Again....Pics Added
Hey Guys,
![]() ![]() Well, I guess it was my turn – someone decided it would be great fun to take a crowbar (I’m guessing) to the DS window, rear window and PS rear brake light assembly over night last night on the Carrera. I have a high deductible on this car so will probably have to eat the costs, but one of my many concerns is that I believe the rear window is NLA. Here are my questions: 1) Can anyone confirm that the rear glass is NLA? This is what I was told by my local glass shop. 2) Is it possible to go with the trimless gasket on the rear glass on an ’88 and if so is a different piece of glass needed (‘89+)? 3) Can anyone recommend a competent glass installer in the greater Sacramento area? Fortunately, it appears there is no body damage and none of the contents were disturbed other than being showered with glass. I will post pics as soon as I can. The ironic thing is that I was just told yesterday that the 2” crack in my 6 month old windshield was irreparable and would be another ~$600 to replace. Why didn’t the vandals do me a favor and break that out, too? Thanks,

Sucks!
![]() Having just sold my '88 coupe, I was under the impression that ALL window glass was still available. Have you tried major glass houses, Safelite, etc? BTW I was going to replace the w/s before I sold my '88 and was told by my glass guy that his cost was $1000- as it had the radio antenna in it...yikes! Needless to say I didnt replace it before the sale.... |

I got two quotes on WS glass. Mobil install, seals, and WS. quote 1 is $645 and quote 2 is $375.
1K for a windshield seems pretty steep. Mine is an 88. Sorry to hear about the haters screwing with your car.

you know you should not use boiling water to clean off a cold windshield. I've heard that it just makes existing cracks run and run. Be careful defrosting your windshield!

Thanks!
I appreciate the suggestions - the mobile glass guy would be good as the car is 30 miles from home and I guess I shouldn't drive it as I was considering at first.
Does anyone know the answer to my rear window questions at the top of the thread or is there a glass guru on the board I should pester with a PM? Thanks,

You should be able to find a used rear window pretty cheap. Put a want to buy ad up in the parts for sale section and something should come up. I think i sold mine for $75 or so. You could be a rebel and use plexiglas back there to make it a tad lighter.
Also be careful removing the 1/4 window seal. It is a very expensive seal like $80 at least. I have a passenger side window if they come back tonight. Rich

Sorry to hear it Mark. If need a good rear glass, I've got one from an 86 that will fit fine. As noted by Rich above, would want $75 + shipping. it has the 3rd brake light.

Advice Needed
Hey Guys,
I'm resurrecting this thread to (hopefully) get some advice. I decided to take this mess to a bodyshop that advertises in the local PCA rag. "Sure, we can do the work no problem...glass is only three days away (according to the local Stealer)." As soon as the shop gets the green light from the adjuster, they start on the body work. They also just happen to find out just then that Niello's 3 day estimate for glass is actually three weeks as it has to come from Germany. WTF??? Now admittedly, I have had trouble finding replacement glass myself, but do I REALLY need to wait 3 weeks for it to come from the motherland? With this much glass out or coming out, they also offered to respray the whole car for an additional $2350. Any feedback on that offer? Thanks - I just hate this cr@p....

I just had my windshield replaced on my Targa.
Glass shop was not able to locate decent aftermarket glass so they had to order from the dealership. Took 8 days to arrive and the total job came out to $1,400. Covered by insurance ![]()

Thanks for the data point, John.
The honest, sad truth is that my local dealer sucks. They are also the local Acura, etc. dealer and if I wanted a neon license plate surround or ground effects kit for my Integra (which, of course, I do not have) they'd have those bad boys IN STOCK....

Sorry to hear the news Mark. What about EASY or Parts Heaven for used glass?
As for the paint, that seems low for a good job. Does the car really need paint?

Thanks, Chris!
I appreciate the offer of assistance. Based on a suggestion above, I called Safelite since they are so large. They do not carry the rear glass so he gave me the number for Pilkington (yeah, I've heard about the quality issues with them) and contacted them directly. They said that because Porsche specified multiple glass configurations (e.g., 3rd brake light, no 3rd brake light, wiper motor hole, no wiper motor hole, RS glass, etc.) that it was too difficult to manufacture/stock them, so they don't.
Whatever the reason may be, there seems to be very little in the way of alternatives to rarified, stratospherically-priced (yes, I understand the $ is in the crapper these days) Black Forest silicon for our rear windows. Aarrgghh.

I'm pretty sure a used rear window is pretty readily available, if not available new...
