My pristine 1983 911SC has been totalled. The owner of the body shop indicates that it is not repairable due to the severity of the impact. Harley rider hit me head on after losing control and laying it down in my path. He was killed instantly.

I am shaken but ok. These cars are built like tanks. I am thankful to be alive and very proud to have loved and invested in what was my 2nd Porsche. I pray there will be a third.

The adjuster is visiting tomorrow and I can already tell that he'll be trying to screw me.

68,000 miles, immaculate inside and out. I paid $20k for it 2.5 years ago. I do have the Excellence market update for 74-89 911s (August 2007 issue).

I am looking for anyone that can help me with data from recent sales of '83 (or perhaps earlier than '83 if it will help) 911SCs that changed hands.

IMO, the value could be in the 16,000-19,000 ballpark.

I think your best bet is to have an Excellence on hand to show the adjuster and don't settle for the first offer. While I think BA's estimates are a little high for the real world, it may be good in your case.

Man, I'm sorry about all of that.

Dig in for a fight with the insurance company, particularly if it's Allstate. If you're a PCA member, get one of their valuations. It's still included in the membership, I think. Now is not too late. The ins. company will try to compile some comps, which will be very difficult for them because of the low mileage and condition, so you won't have difficulty shooting at that. Tell them what you paid and then show them all the receipts for stuff you've done since then. And then find something that shows SC prices are rising. I think you ought to be able to get $20k or damn close. But it may take some time.

I would also find documentation of your purchase price to show the adjuster...that way he knows you aren't trying to screw him. Hope you are feeling OK...it's psychologically very difficult to watch someone die...don't ask me how I know.

Were you not able to purchase an agreed value policy?

My insurance company wouldn't even begin coverage until THEY checked out the car and gave a value for it. For what it's worth, my 82SC with 110,000 miles got a $19,000 replacement value from Mercury Insurance (big company out here in CA) just over a year ago.

Really sorry for what happened.

A few years ago my truck was hit pretty hard. I was very thorough in my documentation, and was getting the run-around for a few weeks from the insurance adjuster.

One phone call to my attorney changed everything.

By this time, I had already authorized the shop to fix the truck, which meant I was on the hook to pay for it.

I simply asked my attorney what I was doing wrong, and he asked permission to call the adjuster. Sure.

Within an hour, the adjuster called me, with a completely different attitude- Asked me what I wanted. Dumb question: Fix my truck. "Yes sir!" Truck was paid for very promptly.

If I ever get hit again, I will give the insurance company ONE chance to settle fairly. After that, my attorney will be getting involved.

I think they were trying to wear me out and go away. Once I called the lawyer, they wanted to settle immediately.

try pca and collector car on line and hemmings - find 5 examples that are for sale - at the same mileage or less than yours - same condition - etc. Print them out - tell em - to either give you the average of the ones you pull out - or they can buy a car for you that meets the exact criteria you are looking for.

sorry to hear about what you went through.

regarding the insurance company, when this happened to me I did the following:

1. I made a spread sheet of all the cars I could find similar to mine and determined the average price.
2. I added on all the extras from my car that would have to be added onto any car I purchased.
3. I added on the dmv fee.
4. I added on the rental car fee.
5. I added on the towing fee.

Then I added it all together and came up with the replacement price. It took awhile for the insurance company to pay, but they did.

Two years ago was not too terribly long ago, I would expect to get around $19K to $20K.

I read about this in the paper the other day and did not realize it was you. Very tragic accident. Leith has an extremely low mileage 82 or 83 in the N&O advertised for about 19K if that helps. Good luck.

very sorry this happened to you and the Harley rider...
one approach is to get the ins. company to agree on the replacement value as described above.. then you get them to agree on a price for you to buy it back from them (when they pay you they "own" the car). I assume many of the key mechanical parts are in perfect condition. This way you purchase e.g. $15k worth of very good and known parts at e.g. $3k or less. You then buy a car (at a very much reduced price) that has some marginal key components and make the swaps... it is a lot of work and hassle but you may come out ahead...

I would be very interested to see how this comes out. pls keep us posted.

Very sorry to hear of this, and hope you are doing okay in all the ways that are more important than the car.

With that said, I'd think a 68,000-mile car in a desirable color and in top-notch condition should be worth quite a bit more than our high evaluation, and would try to get as many data points as possible to support a value north of $20,000.

Sorry to hear this. I just went through this in March on my ’82 SC with 115K miles. After I got the news and a low ball payout from CSAA, it was my responsibility to prove the worth of the car. Ultimate payoff, $20K with the car towed back to my home.

just a quick note to say thanks to everyone. I did the PCA valuation this morning, getting an appraisal from the specialist reseller at the shop where I went for service, thanks for all the comps, I'm girding for the fight that I hope will not be as bad as it could. If they're WAY low on the first offer, I'll retain a lawyer to 'deliver' my counteroffer with all the documentation I can give him.

I had not seen the front of the car, I didn't look after the accident as the rider was lying there. I went to get my stuff tonight (while still light).
It was not as emotionally painful as I expected it would be. I was just totally stunned and in awe of the strength of these cars.

I'm damned lucky to be alive and in one piece.

It has bent front frame rails, crumpled roof and floorpan, ripples through the side, bent 930S steering wheel, I could have easily been killed. I'm amazed. The car saved my life (that and the angle at which the bike hit me, the fact he had probably laid it down instead of spearing into me, etc).

I'll follow up with results, but I REALLY appreciate everyone's help and well wishes. My girlfriend and I are considering (if we can find info about the rider's memorial) sending something, perhaps anonymously, or from her. I would fear that something from me (with my name on it) could trigger more pain and I don't want that.
