Hod Do I fix this? Bad Speaker Install??

So I have been hating the nasty speakers that were installed sometime in 1982, Have the receipts. This is what the PO did, I planned on just replacing the speakers but the damn holes probably wont be able to be covered up.

On top of it I can't seem to remove the deck so I am working in pretty tight spaces, Im sure someone has done this before any tips?

He actually paid a shop in 1982 to do this for him. Still have the receipts.

I was looking for some speakers that might cover the damage, I Think some 6x9's will cover most, then I will look into a new rear deck at some point. Dammit I hate car audio!

Worst thing to put in a 911...what do you need a stereo for when you have 6 cylinders pumping out beautiful music? When I bought my '73, the first thing I did was yank out the stereo and speakers. Unnecessary weight anyway.

In any case, your could always cover the rear shelf with material and be done with it.

There should be four screws holding the rear deck inplace. They are on the part that is behind the seat backs when the seats are in the up position. Once the four screws are out, the back and deck should come out in one piece. After market replacements are available in both vinyl and leather and you can get one with a slightly higher deck for larger speakers. Cost should be $200 - $300 or thereabouts. Good luck with your project.

I have a rear deck in Blue out of a Carrera that I cannot use for anything. If interested, we could probably work out a decent deal for you. Not sure about shipping, but I would not think it would be too terrible. Let me know if you are interested and I can email you some pics.

Sad to see such a stereo hack job. I find numerous ads for interior fabricators in Excellence Magazine. If it's black you should be also be able to find a used one rather easily.

The rear deck is black and Linen in color. Same with the rest of the car. I have looked around, seems to be the easiest is to find a low profile set of 6x9 speakers to cover up the holes and get rid of the ugly ass boxes. Then down the line I will recover the deck black portion of the deck. It just sucks all the new speakers that are 6x9 are blingtastic blue and red with uber cool lights, I am having a hard time trying to find a simple yet attractive rear speaker at any of the local shops and stores. 6x9s are the only size that will be able to cover the nastiness.

I installed Pioneer 6x9 speakers when I redid my interior. The factory opening was all dry rotted so I had to cut it out. I was using the 6x9 for bass but didn't work well so I took the speakers out but left the covers on to cover the hole.

In the picture the speakers are still installed. I don't have pic after I removed the speaker but what I did was glue dark fabric (t-shirt) underneath.

do it right and once. weld in patch panels, grind the metal welds and replace the deck panel.

Or go to RS carpeting after repairing the metal and lose the worthless rear seats.

Don't jury rig it. no offense, but a t-shirt and speaker grills is not a fix. Might as well use bubble gum and bailing wire.

JBL use to sell pretty plain but fantastic speakers in 6X9's I personally would find a nice replacement and maybe even weld em up as doug suggest(well I know I would). I don't have rear speakers(no need for them) in fact I don't listen to my radio at all except when I use it to comute in the morning to listen to talk radio. so pretty boring system in my car

Well, I do not think what I am about to tell you is short-cutting of any sort, but maybe a decent go between until you can replace the panel.

Order a set of black 6x9's from crutchfield. They usually ship pretty fast, and I would bet they still have some plain black ones. Next, find some thicker aluminum sheet, maybe 3/16's and have it cut out to fit the 6x9's inside, but with a 1-2 inch border on the outside of the speaker outline. Get some flat/satin black textured spray paint and paint the trim rings you cut out. Use those to mount your new speakers and be done with it until you are ready to replace the whole deal. If it were me, I would also carefully sand the outside edge of the trim ring a bit so that it contours downward toward the tray...

Just my cheap fix idea, hopefully not too cheap...

that mod by the PO is pretty ghastly.

I'd measure the hole diameter, and come up with an average width for round or oval speakers. You want to find good metal to mount the new hardware to.

If you have to go with oversize speakers, say 7" rounds, you may find that the space between the rear deck and the inner sheet metal is too shallow. My own personal preference is for round speakers. I just think speakers ought to be round for less distortion.

This can be addressed by installing spacers. Many guys on this board have done this, with varying results. I had plastic lexan spacers made by a local plastic company. I sanded them, then painted satin black. The plastic company used my new speaker as a template, and custom drilled the mounting holes for me. All I did was install about 6 screws to hold the 7" Infinity speakers. Mine is a custom setup with wooden mounting rings instead of sheet metal, but you get the idea with this picture.

Everyone that you for your tips and advice. I found a set of pioneer 6x9 that are 2.5" deep that should work for 59 bucks on close out at Circuit City. Hopefully they look better than what I have for now.

Im going to try and find some material down the road in the spring to recover the deck then do away with the stereo all together!

This car is the one I'm going to make all my mistakes on. My next one will look like yours.
