Botched Tune-up
I am a new owner of a 1973 targa with a 83 3.0l SC motor.
I thought that I would do a tune up on it, so I got all of the parts Cap, rotor, plugs, button, and wires. I changed every thing , being very careful not to cross any wires. I then started the car and it back fired. Yes you guessed it I crossed 2 wires. So after getting that corrected, I started the car again. It ran smooth and sounded great, but when it warmed up it started to run rough and shut off. I then tried to restart the car, and it would not fire off. All it did was turn over but would not start. Disgusted I went into the house, and came back after about 30 min or so and tried it again. It started right up and ran fine, until again when it warmed up, it did the same thing. It runs fine when it is cold, but when it warms up, it won't run. Also when it starts to run rough, if I keep patting the gas it will run but not good, but I can not stop or it will shut off and will not start again until it cools down. Can someone please tell me if this has happened to them, and what did you do to correct the problem? I have tried to find similar problems on the forums but didn't see any thing. |

maybe you disconnected the vacuum advance and failed to re-connect, or bumped the distributor out of time? I'd go back and check all of your connections, and make sure the distributor cap is seated as well.

I have had coils that quit producing spark when they heated up. Leave the car sit for 20 minutes and it fires and runs fine...until it gets hot.
The odds are pretty slim that the coil would go bad just when you tuned things up but it's possible. Good luck.

Check to make sure all the plug wires are firmly seated...

"I then started the car and it back fired".
You may have cracked your air box and now have a vacuum leak. Joe |
