checking on superman

Indeed, it was a hell of a ride!! 30 seconds later and I would have been under a large vehicle on a hoist. It was just off the ground. I ran outside when it started shaking. We REALLY got rocked in Seattle!!!

I saw the street wave like the ocean and watched a chimney crumble. A near by building lost its stone facade. Fell right onto the sidewalk. Lucky no one was walking below. My favorite nightclub was devastated. The Fenix Underground is now...well, underground! The telephone poles were swaying mightily and I was afraid as old and rotten as they looked, that they would topple onto us. It lasted for about 30 seconds and crescendoed, then tapered off, but in all I'd say it lasted for about 4 minutes. The latter part being pretty subtle but still noticeable. Seemed like about an hour! I'm just glad I wasn't under a car changing a trans. or something. I'm really amazed that no one died from this. There were some pretty serious injuries though. Critical and serious condition. I hope they all pull through.

I'm in Vancouver, BC, just a couple of hours North down I-5 and judging by the images on Seattle TV, we were *very* lucky. I was working in a computer room at the time of the quake. The raised access floor shook and rolled, and the equipment racks were swaying a bit. No damage to our city, just the citizens nerves. Home, Porsche, motorbikes, and pets are OK. Glad to hear the rest of you are OK as well.

Well, this will help settle the capital budget debate I've been whining about. Public works departments all around here now know what they'll be doing for the next couple of years. Mother Nature, she's a handful sometimes.

Hello from Louisiana, glad to hear everyone and their cars seem well. Hey - I'm in the disaster consulting business, don't do eatrhquakes though, just floods and hurricanes. For those of you who may have experienced home and/or business damage, be on the look out for financial assistance from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). They have alot of good programs that can help with repairs and unemployment assistance. Go look at www.fema.gov

Wow what a crazy 30 seconds. I work just down the street from Paul Weir in downtown Seattle. I didn't think our old bldg was going to make it. But our bldg just suffered a few structural damages to the walls. Everything at home ok to include the 911s. Glad to hear the other Western Washington guys are ok!!

Got a call from a m/c friend in Kent WA this morning. During the quake, a milk crate full of (heavy) junk fell off a shelf and landed on the gas tank of his pristine '69 Triumph Bonneville. Ouch!

Thanks for your concern guys. All's well here - my wife and our families are all fine. Glad to hear that Superman, RLJ, Braniac, et. all are fine too.

I was in my home office with my assistant. It started out with a sound and vibration as if there were about 20 people on the roof jumping up and down, then came noises like small explosions as the building moved up and down, then we had to hold onto the walls while my home moved violently back and forth about a foot or more from side to side for about 15 seconds. The movement was enough to open all my file cabinet drawers that are not latched, knock over books and plants and make me scramble for a door arch. I was in the Alaska earthquake as a young boy, and this was definetly worse. My wife had just left beforehand in the Boxster and wasn't subjected to as much shaking on the road. The cars are fine - nothing fell down on them fortunately. When people asked me how I was doing later, I bravely answered in my best James Bond impression "Shaken, but not stirred" - the truth is something else.

Hey, guys... make sure your homeowner's insurance will cover any quake claims if you suffer damage.... you'd be surprised to find out how many policies DO NOT cover quake damage unless you have a policy rider & pay a small premium increase. Even if you didnt suffer any damage, it would be a good time to call you agent to see if you're covered.

Jlex, it ain't no 'small premium increase' out here in Southern California. It's a full-blown scam -- something like a thousand bucks a year, and the deductable for my place is sixty grand. And the likelihood of the insurer remaining solvent in the wake of a big quake? Yeah, I know.

Flipside is, you can't buy a house without getting it. Welcome to adulthood, I guess.

That's not adulthood, Jack. That's Wonderland. Some of my more liberal (Socialist) friends consider the insurance industry to be a beacon of what's wrong with our economy and social system. Buying security. Or trying to. Insurance companies collect more than they pay out, you know. My friends have a point, methinks. Hope that remark does not push this thread ahead of the "V8" one.
