checking on superman
You and your family okay down there? Looks like the epicenter was pretty close to you. Hopefully all is well and your car has not been damaged. We felt it full on up here at the border, hard to believe that the center was that far away.

I was gripping the wall. 15 seconds seemed like forever. 6.2 is what they are saying.
Pcar in good shape in the company garage! Motorcycles at home---gas on the garage floor? Jw |

Thank you for the concern. We're fine. the car's fine. This was a very vigorous quake, so I was fully surprized to find my home nearly unfazed. God is merciful. for sure.

Now saying it was 7.0. I'm glad I was not under the p-car when it hit. I hope it is still on its jack stands by the time I get home. I understand the concern on the gas though, my GPZ went over on a hit and run once. Not much damage to the bike but I had to push it home as it had no petro!

Super,
Glad to hear everything well! That 7.0 kind of put the capital dome out of commission for a while, I reckon! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Let's hear from our other W WA friends. Tyson, Randy, Gonzo, Jamie, freefly?, GregK..... Hey, and as far as I'm concerned, anyone asking my help around here....gets it. In case there were something I could do to help. I believe Tyson would say the same thing and others as well.

Just a thought, but maybe relift the car off the 'jacks and reset them? Wouldn't want unspent stress to cause the car to tumble! Jw |

I missed it. I was driving my 4x4 pickup down Hwy 101 and never felt a thing, got back to my shop and the guys were out front still shakin' and looking pale.
Glad to hear that it was centered East of me not West. I have no desire to receive a first hand experince with a great big wave. Remember the WHOLE Long Beach peninsula is built on sand, mix water which we have on three sides and sand under us then shake it for a while and it turns into a quivering lump of suck you under sand. My Porsche is in a basement shop in Portland getting the inetior put back in, wonder whats happening there. Randy Jones 1971 911 |

7.0. Wow. I've been through a 6.7, and it knocked down two freeway overpasses within a mile of my house. I hope everyone is all right, and no one was underneath a car on rickety jackstands.

Here in Portland, we definitely felt it as a strong, steady rolling for a very long time. Not a violent shaking. A good solid 30 seconds initially, and then a little more minor movement. It lasted long enough that my coworkers and I were standing around admiring the movement, and then had time to stand facing different directions to see which way the movement was strongest, and then to walk outside, and look around at all the moving stuff. It was definitely the lengthiest one I've experienced.
When I took the engine out of my SC last fall, my car's butt was WAY up in the air, with the jackstands at full extension. There's no way it would have stayed on the jackstands if this earthquake had happened at that time. Gotta go home in a while to check my house. It was built in the 20s, and back then they didn't generally attach the framing to the foundation. I have a fear of my whole house just slipping right off the foundation. But I built a new two car garage a couple of years ago (when I got my SC), and it's fully compliant with all the latest and greatest in seismic rules, so I guess I can always live there! We'll be a happy little family; me, my Audi A4, my SC, and my tools. What more do I need? :-) ------------------ Greg Slater 1980 SC gslater@uswest.net |

US Geological Service has revised it downward to 6.8 and CNN still says no deaths reported so far. Hopefully none will be found!

Now here is the love I first saw when I joined this board!!! I knew it wasn't gone! :-)
Hope everyone is okay........ Nothing that exciting here in Maryland. Not that I want that kind of excitment anyway. No one had any 8" Fuchs knocked of the garage wall that they want to get rid of do they? :-) ------------------ 85 Carrera Targa |

I'm all choked up. I think I'm too sensitive for a superhero.
Yes, it was a long time. And the building I was in, shook pretty vigorously. Eventually you'll see video of some impressive shaking, shelf contents flying, etc. Still no reports of loss of life. Sorry guys, but I'm gonna say it. Ash Wednesday. The Big Guy is showing his mercy. Interestingly, the work I do involves public works construction. There had already been talk of capitol building renovation. Now there's a crack in the marble dome. Those stones are not mortared, or pinned, just keyed. Gravity hold that building together. And craftsmen familiar with marble block construction are very old. Like many older construction methods, it's becoming a lost art. ------------------ '83 SC |
