Replace 72 Calipers and Rotors with those from Carrera

I have a 72 911T with a 3.2 motor that I have just started using at DE and TT events. To improve braking, this winter I will replace the stock front struts, calipers and rotors with those from an 86 Carrera. I know many do not change out the rear calipers and rotors but I would like to upgrade them also. What are the differences between the 72 rear calipers and rotors and 86 Carrera rear calipers and rotors e.g. larger pistons and rotor surface? Can the Carrera rear calipers and rotors be bolted directly onto the 72? Any suggestions for rear brake upgrade will be appreciated. I will use high quality brake pads suitable for the purpose.

You did post pictures of your '72 right? We love pictures...

Many threads cover this topic. The 'Search' button is located on the top right on the page.

You need 3.5" hole spacing on the front struts to use the later brakes, so you're addressing that well with the struts.

My understanding is that the 3.2 brakes are a bolt-up all round for the early cars as long as you have the 3.5" front struts, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The 3.2 Carreras had a brake proportioning valve. Without the P/V, the brake bias on the rear (from the huge single piston 3.2 caliper) will be very pronounced and will make rear lock-up under hard braking likely. (Some like this for track or Auto-X as it makes the rear easy to rotate)

A $50 adjustable P/V and the stock Carrera brake lines from the master cylinder (two lines, with the P/V inbetween instead of a single line) will address that.

A very good source for this info is Bill Verburg's home site.
