Unhappy How do I tell if this is a 73 E engine, and what is it worth (No serial number)

Hi all
Some one has an early MFI engine for sale. The fan shroud band says it is a 73. It is definitaly MFI. The shroud is yellow. Someone has ground away the serial number (I am VERY uncomfortable with buying something that is stolen, even if it was twenty years ago, and this alone may blow the deal). The part number for the points is 1 334 332 205 and the throttle bodies (velocity stacks) is/are 911 10 316 1R. It is in a junk yard, so this guy didn't steal it, but at some point... Are there other part numbers I can use to identify it. The alternator is missing so I can see the top of the cases, or lift the engine to look for numbers, etc. He wants $1500. Is this good? Am I just being too eager? I am in a deep ethical quandry here. Please help me. Thanks guys. Russ

Well, the 'E' engines had green shrouds, 'T' engines had yellow! There is a type number of the form 911/51 or 911/61 (sportomatic) for the 'T' MFI, and 911/52 and 911/62 (sporto) for the 'E' ... and the type number is found slightly forward of the serial number location, and on a horizontal rib to the right of the fan mounting location. You are, or sound like you could be a little too eager! There are chemical/photographic methods to 'recover' a ground off serial number. The fact that the seller is trying to represent what has the markings of a 'T' engine as an 'E' is something to bear in mind! If it still has the distributor, look at the rev-limiting rotor, pull it off and the underside will be stamped with 6500 for 'T,' and 7100 for 'E' engine. The Bosch part number for the distributor also indicates the version of the engine. Good luck!

The number I put on is not the points as I said, but is actually the rotor and it says 7100 on the bottom. The disty has one vacuum hose. The numbers you are talking about, are they on the upright for the fan support with the star and then (the ground off) serial number? Or somewhere near by?
I didn't know the T ever had MFI, just CIS in 73 1/2, but I dont know much so PLEASE feel free to correct me. Is $1500 a good price? Or should I wait and spend more on a 3.0 later. It is going in a '69T LUX chassis. Thanks again. Russ

I had an early '73T sporto. It did indeed have MFI and a yellow fan shroud. I ran all the numbers and this engine was the original for the car. The motor you are looking at isn't worth much and will require work and money to get it going. Any theft recovery item sold should have the proper paperwork to go with it. The seller should be able to do this for you. If you do not get the proper paperwork the engine could possibly be confiscated from you.
The engine "type" number Warren spoke of is on the horizontal surface behind the upright fan brace on the front right side of the engine.

I think 1500 is to much... Especially
with the history of this motor being unknown.

I recently sold a complete 69 2.0E with
MFI Altenator, MFI pump Metal throttle bodies
.... Sold as a core motor for $750.

There's a 69 2.0L engine in ebay that needs rebuilding. I'm not sure what is included:

Are you sure they were ground off? Replacement cases direct from Porsche had no serial or type numbers, just casting numbers.

A couple of years ago, in Michigan, I passed on a complete 72 911T motor a friend of mine had for $500. It had all except exhaust system and was running when he took it out of his car a few years back. It quickly sold to someone in Texas and he shipped it.
