Input shaft seal leak?

This is my first 911 (always wanted one) and I have owned it for only a few months. It has some small oil leaks which I assume are from the usual places as I have gleaned from lots of previous threads. However I had the rubber boot off the hand brake to adjust the warning light switch and I noticed oil under the hand brake mechanism - a fair amount of it. It looks very clean so I am assuming it is tranny fluid. Is this from a leaking input shaft seal?

Thanking you all in advance.

Kevin,
Welcome!
You will find a lot of help here.

Smell the oil and compare to your transmission lubricant.
Remove the shift linkage access plate (at the rear of the tunnel) and inspect for oil.

If there is oil there, I suspect the leak is at the shift rod seal where the shifter goes into the transmission.

It is possible to replace this seal with the transmission in place. It isn’t easy but with patience and the correct technique it is possible. This has been discussed before. Do a search using “transmission shift rod seal” or some variations.

The “input shaft seal” will not leak into the cockpit. It simply leaks into the clutch, ruining the disc and sometimes causing distress to the syncros from the clutch not fully releasing.

Best,
Grady

Thanks - I suspect I owe you $12, sure sounds like the problem. Right now I am working in "The Great White North" but can't wait to get home and pull that cover.

I found the best tool to pull the seal on mine ws a set of SNAP ON picks.
About 40.00 for a set of four.

Use them all the time.

The real handy one id the one with the full loop (U like tip).
This allow you to go between the shaft and the seal,
spin the pics and grab the outer edge of seal between the seal and shaft tube
and pull out the seal.

It's a liitle harder then it sounds
mine took a little work to wiggle it all te way out.

Just frustrating I would say.

Thanks John, I'll pick up a set. Nothing like having the right tools for the job.

is it brake fluid? does the 77 come with boosted brakes? on my 75 car, the master cylinder went bye-bye, and spewed fluid into the car. some of it, flowed down the center tunnel and made a friggen mess. maybe this happened way before, and some of the fluid is just hanging out there, under the tunnel.

when my input shaft seal went, it simply dripped to the ground, not much made it into the tunnel.
