IMO, they are an expensive waste of money.

This discussion was slanted towards a 930 engine rebuild, but still some good info. FWIW, in a turbo application (and I relize that's not what you're inquiring about) "upgraded" head studs like ARP, Performance Developments, Supertec, etc. are pretty high up on the build sheet. Of course there are different forces at work when you toss a Turbo into the mix! YMMV...
Advice on Head Studs for 930

You might get different responses in the engine rebuilding forum.

Absolutely true.
Stick with the 993TT studs and you'll never go wrong.

Cheap, used, factory plain steel studs.

I would (did) go with the factory 993 steel studs a few years ago. They are not that expensive, and due to the high cost (or amount of work involved even if you can do the work yourself) of removing and tearing down the engine, I would not use used head studs, though I know others have done so apparently successfully.

I used 993tt/RS/GT2 studs on mine.
993.101.170.51 x24 They used to be very reasonably priced
