What penetrates the engine cover?

The shroud that sits atop the engine (green for a 2.7 in my case) has a centrally-located rubber grommet through which the alternator wires pass. There is also this odd penetration on the [edit - DRIVER'S] side of the car through which nothing seems to pass. Is this just a vent or something? I'd figure the stuff under the shroud would be plenty well ventilated due to the big giant air impeller blasting air under there all the time, but who knows. . .

Anyone know what's supposed to go here? TIA.

Actually, that's the drivers side on my car. It goes to the oil vapor canister on the passenger side.

You are correct (my mistake) - it's driver's side / odd-numbered cylinder bank. Photo is taken looking towards what would be the rear of the engine.

Looks like P/N 000-043-205-16-M136

Here in the Pelican catalog:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_ENGoil_pg6.htm

(I'd post the parts diagram too, but for some reason it comes up with the diagram for a 959 instead of a '74 911, go figure)

Is this correct? Do you know where it's supposed to connect to on the engine? I'm guessing I have a connection point blocked off somewhere then seeing as I don't have any oil geysers when the engine is running. . . Hmmm. . .

A hose should run from that port in the shroud (on the 1,2,3 cylinder side) to your gas vapor charcoal canister, located in the upper passenger side of the engine compartment. The canister is a black, oval shaped container.

regards,

OK I'll look for a spare/un-used port on the cannister. Does the other end of the hose connect to anything on the 1-3-5 side or does it just penetrate the shroud and terminate there, allowing the crankcase fumes to get "blown" out by way of the impeller fan and resulting airstream?

This seems to make the most sense - that the P.O. just hacked off the vent line which is the "stub" that's seen left. I just need to figure out where the other end goes if that's the case - there's probably a nipple on the cannister with nothing plugged into it I'd guess.
