![]() I'm in the market for a Halon extinguisher. I was wondering what size y'all use? I am leaning towards the 5 lb, but if you think that the 21/2 is sufficient, I would prefer this b/c of its smaller size. I'd just hate to have a fire and not have enough halon! Also, what are some good places to mount this thing in the car? I assume it will come with a strap type mount that I can screw into place somewhere. I'll probably order a reconditioned one from: http://www.h3r.com/prodrecon.htm Just not sure what size. Thanks in advance for your replies. Nick,
Check out the seat mount that Brey Krause makes. http://www.enter.net/~breykrause/homefire.html No drilling into the tub is required. It may not be the cheapest but it is functional and looks good. I have a BK harness bar and the quality is good. I bet Pelican can get you one. |

I mounted mine on the lower part of the roll bar that is visible between the seat and the pillar on the driver side. I have seen others mount it there for several reasons. If there is a fire and your straped in, someone opening your door is in plain site of it. Also if you are the one grabbing it, you will also be getting out of the car before any use of it. There is nothing wrong with under your seat, but this can be done with pipe clamps and not an $85 piece of metal.

I have a 2kg Halon extinguisher that fits horizontally along the tunnel next to the passenger's feet. The seat does not hit it when moved forward, but this extinguisher came from a Mercedes and is short enough for this location. I shaped a 1/4" sheet of aluminum to mount to the tunnel, so the extinguisher could set just off the carpet. Another, 5lb, extinguisher might be too long. It seems to me that Warren has a 5lb Halon in about the same location, but angled up, perhaps for space. The Brey-Krause are nice, but spendy.
Track rules usually require they be bolted (no sheet metal screws). ------------------ '83 SC |

Having been in several race cars with protective fire systems, the most impressive was in 1957 Ferrari GTO. He used a 10 pound bottle. I plan to do the same for my street car as soon as I collect the proper material & :
Rig up a set of fire switches on the dash. One button will activate the nozzles in the engine compartment only. One will active the nozzles in the trunk area. (A separate switch will also flood the gas tank) Finally, the main switch will activate ALL of the nozzles. Only one nozzle will be inside the car and it will be located behind the dash, staring the electrics right in the face. Reason being is: Ahlon renders O2 inert. No O2 = no fire. No O2 = no breathing. A separate, standard extinguisher will be used for the cabin. The entire system should not weigh much, and having seen HALON work first hand, I could not imagine NOT employing this to protect my darling 911. The entire system is self-contained, so there is little chance of the system being disabled due to accident etc. Am I nuts? [This message has been edited by VIPRKLR (edited 03-11-2001).] |

Nick, the mounting point depends somewhat on the purpose of having the it (Yeah, yeah, I know! To put out fires!), If you intend to you use your car for track events, you want the extinguisher within in EASY reach of your driving position, even with your harness on. The intent here is to save YOUR BODY from an in-car fire for the few minutes until help arrives. The roll bar mounting or tunnel mounting between the seats, behind the emergency brake are good locations. The BK passenger seat floor mounting is a bit of a stretch and impossible with the harness on.
- If on the other hand, you want the extinguisher for street driving, then probably anywhere in the cockpit, mentioned above, will work. Note however, that a 2 1/2 or possibly even a 5 pounder is probably not going to put out a serious engine fire - small electrical fires, yes. Nick,
Look at the 2/12lb halon that og racing sells. They also sell the brey-krause mount. I bought mine a few months ago when they gave rennlist members a good deal. Hope this helps. Jim -84 Targa |
