DME CHT sensor socket?

Hi Folks,

I was trying to remove my CHT sensor, but no go. On my way home today, I saw a Snap-on truck parked near my friend's shop so went in to ask him if he had anything like what I needed. He didn't.

I need something pretty quick. Does anybody have any recommendations for something I could obtain locally without sending away to Baum or somebody?

Thanks for the help,

Ian

to remove, if replacing with new, just cut the wire and use a 13mm socket to remove.
I just replaced mine with needle nose as others have done and used an open 14mm wrench to tighten a little more. Getting the threads to bite on install was tricky for me with the bigger wire and tight space because of the tin.

Good luck

I bought a cheapie deep socket and cut a slot in the side with a cutting wheel. It doesn't have to be super strong since the torque for the sensor is low.

Hey Ian,

I bought mine on some internet tool website. It's no Snap-On, but it works to get the new sensor tightened up. I just googled "slotted socket" or "sensor socket" and found one.

If you want, I can Priority Mail mine to you. You'd get it in Friday mail delivery. Just mail it back to me via regular US Mail when you're done.

P.S. if you make one, use a deep socket so that you don't have to put too much of a bend in your sensor wire when you slip the socket onto the sensor head. You'll see what I mean when you do a test fit.

Guys, no need to priority mail. I just did what Joe said-bought a 14mm (not 13!) deep socket, cut a slot wide enough to pass the cable out the side and as high as you can. It worked like a charm, took all of 5 minutes to cut with my Dremel and a cutoff blade, and cost $4, the cost of the socket.

IIRC, the old sensor was 13mm and the new one was 14mm. You don't need a specialty socket to take the old one off: just cut the wire and take it out with a regular socket. You need the slotted deep socket for the new sensor so that the wire will not get in the way.

Guys, thanks for the advice. My sensor is the newer 14 mm. type and is only a year old, so I want to remove it intact without severing the wire. I do have a slotted 13 mm socket I've used for VW's in the past, but it was a PITA to grind away. I was kinda looking for something like Russ has. Who is the maker of that socket Russ?

I tried grinding a slot in the box end of my Craftsman 14, but just removing that bit of metal weakened the box enough so it slips over the flats when trying to turn it. That sensor is really in there!

ianc

edited to say: the rush is off BTW. I just took the motor over to Rob At S-Car-Go and he used a socket very similar to Russ' to remove it. I'd like to grab one of those to have the right tool for the job however.

Ian, mine is a Koken, or maybe "Ko-ken" socket made in Japan. The steel is very thick, perhaps because 2/3 of the socket is cut away. It appears that the part # is 3300FN. I wish I remembered which website I ordered it from.

It is a 14mm 6 point type of socket. I used it to remove my CHT sensor in a moment of confusion over my idling problems, and re-installed it with no damage to the sensor wire. I guess I have a spare CHT sensor too.

Good news and bad news:

I found the website: thetoolnetwork.com
http://www.thetoolnetwork.com/sensor_socket__1.html

but it says "not in stock". The website might be incorrect, so I'd try them anyway.

I didn't try Baum Tools, but they have tons and tons of stuff. I'm sure they have a 14mm sensor socket.

Due to needing various sizes of this type of socket for CHT, O2 sensors and an assortment of vehicles, with other oddball size sensors, I made a set of the type as shown. I now have a deepwell slotted/notched socket for every size from 12mm up to 27mm. Took about an hour to cut and contour the entire set. The socket set cost about $17.00.

Holy $hit!$52 for that?! I'm glad the Snap-on guy didn't have one in his truck.

I'll pay $20 just to have the right tool on hand, but $52 is ridiculous, even for a Snap-on. Thanks for the help everybody, and Russ, I'll look further into grabbing a Koken somewhere.

Take care all,

ianc

haha, Ian I had the same thought when I looked at that last year.

The Koken is about $30 which is still pretty ridiculous. I just didn't think the home made socket would work, but it's worth a try. The problem is that the access is so tight, you can't start with a large thick walled socket.

Trust me, a 3/8" drive 14mm socket (deep) off the shelf from Lowe's and 5 minutes with a Dremel with cutoff wheel did the trick.
