Hey all you DIY...since I am getting deeper into maintaining my P-car without my mechanic, I am beginning to wonder if I am going to miss scheduled maintence.
So here is what I have so far: Oil change filter cahnge 3000mi Air Filter? Fuel Filter? Brake pads (obviously when they squeal) CV joint repack ~ 20,000 Engine belts? Tranny oil ~20,000 Lube ?? Valve adjustment?? Spark plugs? Ignition wires? I can't think of anything else right now, but a good list would be great so I can be sure to keep on top of my car's health. MJ |

Search the archives. There was a LONG thread on this. The opinions varied from "follow the owners manual" to "change all fluids twice daily".

Warren put this list together a while ago, at the request of some early 911 owners. He meant it as a starting-off point -- and, of course, some listers decided to take it as a one-size-fits-all program for every 911 ever manufactured.

IMO that list is not even a good starting point for an SC, unless one wants to do a ton of needless (not harmful, just unnecessary) maintenance on their car.
Adjusting the valves every 3000 miles, changing plugs every 6,000, removing the distributor every 6,000 (?!?), repacking and adjusting bearing every year (?!?), disassembling the distributor every year (?!?), CV joints every 2 years or 20,000 miles (?!?!), disassembing the braking system every 2 years (?!?!), aligning the wheels every year, changing transaxle fluid every 3000 miles (?!?!?) is all just WAY, WAY too much, in my opinion, certainly on an SC or newer car, and most of that stuff on an earlier car, too, in my opinion. Not a flame, just a differing opinion. The manual lists the service intervals for most or all of those items, while I generally like to do things a little earlier and more often than the factory specs, I don't think it is necessary to go overboard (like valve adjusts and trans fluid changes five time the amount set forth in the manual, repacking bearings every year, etc.). Again, (1) it certainly wouldn't hurt the car to over-maintain it, and (2) just my opinion. |
