I am looking to replace my OEM steering wheel. Some other owners have suggested Momo or Sparco. Any recommendations and size requirements(diameter). Also to remove the existing wheel,is there some trick to extracting the horn pad. Thanks

To remove the horn pad, you simply pull it straight out from the wheel. Make sure you pull it _straight_ out, not cocked, and if you need to use something to pry it, be sure you exert as much equal pressure as possible opposite the point where you're prying. The amount of pull it may take might surprise you, but the horn pad is held in place simply by the "spring" pressure of receptacles that grip three (in the case of my SC)small posts. There's nothing else holding the horn pad--no screws, no bolts, nothing.

I have a 350mm Momo in my 84 Carrera 3.2
I think it fits perfectly in the 911 cabin design. Also the slightly smaller diameter gives you more steering feel. But I have to admit that it also steals the view to the gauges. See the picture I've e-mailed. |

I have a Momo Competition in my '83 SC. I like the look and feel, but you do have to look around it to see the guages.

I was thinking of getting the 930-style wheel from A-J USA. It looks Factory with the enamalled Porsche crest in the center. See their website for a picture.

The AJ-USA wheel is great, just a little pricey. Click here to see it in a 73 interior.

I'm going to go against the flow here. KEEP the OEM steering wheel! I just replaced my broken MOMO with an OEM steering wheel and have NO regrets whatsoever! The car has a better feel, you can see ALL of the gauges in their entirety, and it looks more original and for that case better.

I have to agree with Josh. Momos are great for occasional use and competition use, their smaller size makes effectively shortens the steering ratio. But for street use, I find the OEM wheel is the most comfortable.

Personally I can't stand the early OE wheels -- way too huge (can you say "bus"?) and skinny.
I have a Momo Monte Carlo on my 914 and a Nardi/Personal "Fittipaldi" on my 911. Love them both. Whatever you do, KEEP the original steering wheel in case you sell the car or decide to return it to stock! |

Thanks for the help. I ended up purchasing and installing a MOMO Millenium steering wheel. It is a little smaller than the original wheel without obstructing too many of the gauges. The only issues is that you loose the locking mechanism and the horn is virtually impossible to connect.
But it looks better and handles better. Definitely an improvement. |
