backdating questions

I've got a few backdating questions. I've searched and read a bunch of threads just want to make sure I've got it right and get current answers.

If I want to back date an SC or carrera can I use a long hood from a 65-68 911?

Since the latches won't match up are my only options the rubber latches to hold it closed or weld in an earlier panel (where can I get one?). I could also get a fiberglass hood that works on a short hood latch panel, but for some reason I got it in my head to try and use as much steel as possible.

Also I've been told I can't use 65-68 fenders. Since 69-73 fenders are rare and $$$, what are my options? Fiberglass fenders I see are available from a number of sources. Are there repro steel fenders? Can I get a 74-89 fender and have the turn signal\horn grill section welded on? Where can I get them or who does this service?

Also I need some clarification on fenders and flares. To create an RS clone from an SC or carrera, do I just need to weld on turn signals and horn grills, pick up a long hood, front and rear bumpers and ducktail? Will the front and rear fender flares be correct for an RS.

For an RSR clone, I would need the fenders from a turbo model or buy turbo flares correct?

Also feel free to list any resources (shops, info, etc.) that are helpful. I know TRE and restoration designs can help. Any east coast (specifically NJ/NY/NJ/CT) shops would be great.

I think that's it for now. Thanks!

I think pelican Damon makes the part you can use on 74-89 fenders or get the steel bit from a pair of rusty 69-73 fenders and weld them on.

yes it will look like a rsr but the real rsr flares were a little diffrent but for a clone they are good enough i think.

Tre also sells a longhood that uses the 74-89 latch (spelling ??) so you don,t have to change out the front part or go for the rubber latches. I,ve seen a few TRE backdates and they look real good !

Dutchie,

Thanks for the quick replies.

Your car looks awesome. It's one of the paint schemes I'll be thinking about. I think there is a poster on here - cneilsen, that had his rsr replica painted a satin black for a while. I believe it's now a different (orange?) color. A flat black Porsche looks badass.

TRE's hood is an option if I give in and decide to go fiberglass. I know fg is lighter but I'm stuck on trying to get a steel hood (have one lined up) and fenders. I just think the fitting of the bodywork will be easier with all steel.

And I guess I should pm Damon and see if he still makes those parts. I could have sworn I also saw reference to a shop that would take your 74+ up fenders and do this for you. Gotta learn to bookmark this stuff...

cneilsen has two cars i think one in orange and one in matte/flat black. Both look awesome ! ask him how he did the paintjob mine is a 30 euro rattlecanjob and looks like crap upclose. I never wash my cars so it,s good enough for me.

Reaper930 is doing a 935 clone in flatblack i,m sure he can tell you how to do it right too.
I think Damons name on the board is Series900 but i,m not sure bump the thread a few times maybe someone knows where to get your front fenders modified. Good luck with the project !

Cheers,

This thread has a lot of backdate content.

You can also search on 'Zuffenhaus' they are located in NC.

A bigger issue lurks at the rear. That panel needs to be replaced as well as the front. There is no TRE fix for that I'm aware of. Also search posts by MikeZ on the subject.

I went around the back end issue by building my own design. If you want to see it, look up my name along with "bumpers."

The rear takes 30 mins to take out the panel behind the reflector no big deal there. I did the complete backdate in a day. And yes TRE sells a longhood that doesen,t need replacement panel in front. But hey what do i know
