Title Help: VIN# Error
Not quite a year ago, I bought a '71 Targa out of Colorado, but I've had problems titling the car because the VIN doesn't match the Title:
911 111 1085 = Car Vin 911 111 085 = Title Vin Take your pick where the missing "1" goes. Obviously, there was a problem where some typed 5 consecutive ones rather than 6; however, the CO DMV (so far) isn't co-operating. Even if I prove that the VIN must have 10 #s (pretty easy to prove), I can't prove where the "1" goes... I have some paperwork, but not enough of a paper trail to establish the VIN. Every '71T Targa had a VIN of 911111XXXX, obviously. Any thoughts on how to get a correct title from CO, so I can register the car in NM? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,
I had the same problem when I bought my '68 911T. For some reason the title had an extra '9' added to the VIN. The car came with a title that read 9 118 X XXXX All the VINs on the car say 118 X XXXX For the 1968 model, the VIN is 118 X XXXX I bought the car out of State, so when I registered the car in my home state I went to the DMV and explained the mistake, they did a VIN inspection and filled out some paperwork for a Title correction. They issued me a title that matches the VIN on the car. Cheers, http://nicolashunziker.com |

Find out where the body shops get their salvage inspections done. It will be a DMW office that visually checks to see if they used stolen parts to rebuild the car. They (dmv) can look over your situation and process the correction.

I had a similar problem that came to light last time I registered my 71 landcruiser that I bought from the original owner. There was an incorrect digit in the registered VIN. I had to have the girl at the registries office come out and 'sight' the vins on the cruiser to be sure they were not tampered with.
If it comes to it, register it in another state that has a more common sense approach to this type of thing and then transfer the title to your state.

A couple have already stated what I have found is pretty much the norm for incorrect title information. Most states have a form that you get from the DMV, tax assessor, or whatever the name of the office/dept. is in your state, that do the vehicle registrations. A form from them needs to be filled out and then the vehicle and all of the paperwork needs to be taken to whoever does the inspections, for corrected titles. In some states, this may be the State Police, Highway Patrol, attorney generals office, DMV inspection dept., or what ever the name is of the people that would inspect the vehicle. Published material, bills of sale, promissory notes, etc. will also be needed for the inspection people to see, and know that it was just a typo, and then it is usually a fairly quick fix for the problem. I have had a similar problem in the past, but it was with the vehicle year being wrong. I followed the process for the state that I live in, not the state where the vehicle came from, and it all worked out well. Another possibility might be having to get a "bonded title" or have to use one of the title services to get things right. Good luck!!

I have an affidavit of VIN from a NM inspector, which just proves that the CAR has the VIN of 9111111085; but since the title says 911111085 (1 less "1"), they still don't match.
They want a correct title from Colorado, which I can't seem to get. It's nuts, of course, because you can't just say the MVD - "Hey, this is obviously wrong, because Porsche didn't have any 9 digit VIN numbers in 1971, so there MUST HAVE BEEN AN ERROR." - You can say this, but they don't care. I work during the hours the MVD is open, so it's really tough to get there for me. I appreciate the help, and further suggestions are welcome. I'm trying a full court press with NM MVD, trying to get something done in CO, etc. just to get this wrapped up.
