Unhappy C4 bearing noise_engine fan

The main engine fan bearing on the alternator shaft has just started groaning/buzzing when the engine is running around 2000 rpm.
It is quiet at all other speeds. I don't detect any play in the bearing.

Has anyone else had this experience?

If your car is like mine, you can remove the belt and spin the alternator freely. It should feel extremely smooth. Even so, your bearing could be starting to die.

Bearings give plenty of warning and can run a long time as they're dying. But you don't want alternator bearings to go too long because the rotor nearly touches the magnets (stator, fields, whatever).
