Buy the in-tank filter; 911.201.141.00 and its O-ring; 911.201.143.00,......
These are a fine-screen nylon filter and thankfully they clog very easily due to dirt and rust particles in the tank.

Yeah but how do I get to my existing screen or whatever is there? I suppose I ought to replace the filter first but it doesnt make sense that its the filter since it happened after sitting over night.. seems like maybe lots of debri in the tank?? Is there a screen in there??

Adding to what Steve says, you could disconnect the fuel line at the rear and jump the fuel pump to check volume. Let it run for 30 seconds and see what kind of flow you ultimately get. If the filter is plugged, it will surely show.

Fuel Pump Relay Wiring....
Quote:
All 911 ('76 to '83) CIS US models whose wiring have not been altered should not have a running fuel pump at RUN position (ignition switch). The FP will be running @ RUN if: 1). Air sensor plate switch is open. Or the ground wire for terminal #85 (fuel pump relay) is open. 2).The fuel pump relay coil is defective causing the NC (normally closed) terminals (#87a & #30) to stay closed when the coil is energized. 3). Terminals #87a & #30 is jumpered or connected similar to doing fuel pump test. There are many 911 owners who claim that their FP run @ RUN position and have no problem with it. What they don't realize is that SAFETY feature of the air plate switch has been compromised (not working). Inspite of this wiring anomaly, the car will run OK as far as CIS is concerned but without the ability to stop the FP in case of an accident. For your current problem, I would concentrate on the following: a). Fuel delivery pressure or flow rate. b). Unmetered air or vacuum leak. c). Permature is in good condition. Happy New Year to All!!! I did a part throttle cut while the car was missing badly, pulled a plug and it was wet for sure.. so I am guessing this is not a fuel issue?[img]
Here is a pic.. It mostly dried off though by the time I shot it. ![]() Oh, and I just heard the loudest exhaust explosion I have ever heard in my whole life. Just about had a heart attack!

The plugs being wet and the exhaust fuel based back fire point to possible ignition problem. I know replacing parts to troubleshoot is expensive and usually not that helpful, in this case I'd try to get another ignition box. I think your car uses a 3 pin CD box. Used ones are available here (I have 2 myself).

Well, I am so glad I installed a MSD system.. my car has the exact same problem.. I dont get it.. how can my plugs be wet? How can black smoke be spewing?
I also removed the fuel filter and blew thru it.. its far from clogged (some have told me I may have a fuel delivery problem). The car runs fine for about 15-20 seconds on a COLD start and then goes into a very bad miss.. part throttle also misses badly. I removed the wire to the fuel pressure regulator and it didnt seem to change anything.. How could the car suddenly go rich? And how could it happen intermittantly? I suppose the FPR could be messed up. I guess I will have to go dig my CIS gauges out of my moving truck. Anybody need a permatune? ![]()

The XR 700 is a point replacement not a CDI replacrment. A Pertronix does the same thing and is less expensive as well.

Well; I figured it out.. sort of.. the car was rich.. how in the hell it went rich coming here from Denver Colorado is beyond me.. and what is really annoying is that it was intermittant.. I went 1/8 of a turn counter clockwise on the fuel distributer adjustment and now its fine.. at least for now.. something is going intermittant.. which means if it does it again its going to go very lean.. which is not good..

Well.. after all this dinking around.. this was my problem.. someone messed with the control pressure regulator.. still no gauges but as soon as I took it apart I knew what the problem was.. someone richened the hell out of the mixture at cold start.. and then it went super lean..
After resetting the cold control pressure all is now perfect. anyway here is a pic. ![]() I think I will post how to do this without gauges.. its really easy.
