question on heater flapper box cables

Hi,

I have a 930 with automatic heat (that does not work, but that is another story)

Under the car, the cables that attach to the heater flapper boxes have a plastic sheath on them.

Does that outer sheath come with new cables. The pictures do not seem to show them. It looks like mine may have been trimmed. They are not connected at the flapper box end and seem short. They kink at the flapper box because they are tight.

Thanks

Ed

Also, is there a good post somewhere that someone talks about fixing/replacing the auto heat unit. My knob just spins (I know, sounds like a personal problem)

I have a replacement unit, but I am putting off getting in there at it.

Hi, I don't remember if the cable housings come when you buy new cables. I think that they don't. When I replaced my cables, my housings/cable guides were OK. The inner cable on one side was broken. I decided to try to find the inner cable locally, instead of having to wait for parts to be shipped. I am glad I decided to do that, because I found the cable right here in town. I bought enough to do the replacement at least twice. I think I posted this info here at the time. The inner core cable that I used, is some excellent, stainless steel, operating cable core, so I hopefully should not have to replace for a long, long time. The reason the factory cable broke was due to rust, from moisture getting in the cable guide tube, and then the rust finally did it in. the guides do really need to be the full length of the inner cable, or it could cause kinks again, due to the cable not being supported the full length. Good luck!!

I have a feeling that what happened was that someone before me had a broken cable and instead of replacing the whole thing they snipped off the end and shortend the guide.

Thanks

Ed

I have been up and down the pelican web site. I can not see the guide for sale. Can someone point me to it.

Also, looking at the part drawings, I do not have the connecting piece. I have the heater hose going straight to the flapper box.

Thanks

Ed

Ed, I did this a year or two ago. The cables do not come with the cable guides. Unfortunately, I just don't rememeber if I shortened the new new guides to match the old. I the feeling that I didn't. The guide parts are parts 54 and 55...

mb911, I took a piece of the old cable core that was still in good shape and went to a local shop that deals in commercial type mowers and such. Matched up the correct size with the new stainless steel core and I just guessed at the length that I would need. The difference in cost between the stainless steel and the plain steel was about $0.08 a foot. I even refinished my entire hand brake/heater handle assembly, along with a new type of connection for the heater cables, instead of them just being twisted around after being inserted into the heater levers. I have this mod on another thread posting. Good luck!! Tony.

I just replaced my cables this last weekend as part of a manual heat backdate, I got the cables from ACE Hardware in the nuts and bolt isle. That plus some wire holders for the heater boxes were $6.00, did the job with an oil change in about an hour.

I did this job about 4 years ago, and was able to clean out the cable guides and re-use them.
