Side mirror confusion
I bought an OEM side mirror on e-bay that just arrived. It was advertised as a 69-73. However, it's a 74-76 mirror.
Now my confusion. Just to be sure that I'm not smokin' crack, I checked the part # on Pelican. It's 91173101300. Here's what comes up.... although, I noticed that it ends in a 1 not a zero as shown on my mirror base. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&make=POR&model=911E§ion=BDYext&page=7&bookmark=33&part_number=911-731-013-01-M100 Now, why does Pelican say 72-76??? I thought there's a difference. the 70-73were smaller, while the 74-76 were similar, but larger. Am I wrong?

Timely post.
When I got my '73, the mirror base and post had some chips in it that looked unsightly so I figured I'd order a new one and I did as you did and received what you received. I think it's just a case of the pre-74 mirror being superceded by the later part. However, The newer base and post do fit the old style mirror. My local wrench gave me a spare old mirror to tinker with since I wanted to see how to take it apart and switch out the old mirror and put it on the new base. Try as I might to protect the black plastic sleeve that the glass fits into as well as the metal housing I could not remove the glass without breaking it. So I did but that enabled me to get inside and see how the mirror housing mates to the mirror post. Simple one nut holds it on so I went to a local glass shop and they cut me a new piece of glass and put the whole thing back together with the period correct mirror now on a new base...Oh and best part is that the the cost for the new glass was just $5.32

That's right, kilodawg. Supercessions have merged the two mirrors (they originally were different between '73 and '74). The '70 and '71 911s had round Durant mirrors.

Hey Scott thanks for weighing in.
You know that kind of descriptive info really should find it's way to the catalog for a part like that. I was new to the early cars when it bit me. I would still have purchased the '74 and up mirror because it was the only option I had at the time but if you are a relative newbie and you go to the early car section of the catalog and a mirror is listed, without a disclaimer, it's reasonable to think that you will be getting the period correct mirror....
