I found this dial indicator on the Platz-mall tool sight. I've seen these advertized in magazines for $60 or so and these are on sale for $34.95 w/ free shipping.
Just wanted to double check and make sure that this is the one I want to do my cam timing and layshaft end play measurments before I buy. It comes with an adjustable magnetic stand but I'm guessing that I'll still have to buy the "Z" stand for the cam timing right??? thanks, ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa [This message has been edited by Leland Pate (edited 03-22-2001).] |

you need the Z holder. get a METRIC gauge. with the gauge in the holder, you need an extension that extends 25mm beyond the base of the holder, in order to contact the spring retainer and allow some additional movement of the gauge as the valve opens. perf. products sells it all, as do others.

Leland, there is a Harbor Freight Tools store in your area. They carry a dial indicator that is perfectly useable for you. Its regular price is, I believe, $14. On sale, you can get it for about half that. It comes with an extension. I'm not going to tell you this again, Leland, you're a smart man.
Admittedly, it is calibrated in thousanths of an inch, so it is non-metric, but the conversions would be easy. ------------------ '83 SC |

Hi Leland. I think you would be fine with Super's harbor freight indicator. I use this stuff for a living so tend to spend $$$ on starret or brown& sharp tools. The inch model will work fine but you alway have the chance of making calculation errors. Funny stuff can happen when you write down the numbers in the wrong order so exercise caution.
![]() to convert mm to in. mm/25.4= inch value. example 1mm/25.4=0.0393.... I had posted a link to Enco tools some time ago and they have a nice selection of affordable indicators and all sorts of accessory holders and tips. get that thing back together soon! summer is coming david 89 turbo cab |

Hello 5axis! I will add my 2 cents that might as well get a digital caliper too. Not only is it very handy to have (unless the battery goes dead)but also you can open it to a dimension in inches, press a button, and it is converted to mm! Slick! When first started working at a machine shop, my first micrometer was a Mitutoyo with a mecahnical digital readout. It saved quite a few parts from the scrap bucket by not misreading the old barrel type of readout.

I bought the Harbor Frieght indicator. For the price I can convert to metric a lot of times.
