Newbie Internal Engine Designation Code Question
This is probably the millionth question of this type but despite a few web searches and reviewing Zimmerman's Used 911 Story in detail, I still have this question:
The internal engine designation code on the 1978 911SC I've just bought is 930/04. What does this indicate? The VIN is 9118201087 and the engine number is 6281234 both of which I've decoded using Zimmerman's book. Thanks for any help offered. |

The 930/04 is the engine type, as you know. It verifies you have a 3.0 liter engine. Your VIN and engine number are all correct for a 1978 model. A Certificate of Authenticity will confirm that those components all came from the factory as one unit :ie: matching numbers car. Short of that, suffice it to say that engine and VIN were produced for the model year (MY) 1978.

I'm toying with getting a CoA. I took a look at my copy of Paul Frere's 911 Story and I see on page 75 he refers to the 911 SC engine designation codes. He mentions that the designation 930/03 uses the same crankcases as on the Turbo models. He then mentions the designation code 930/09 came about for the 1980 model cars. While he describes the differences between the 930/03 and 930/09 designations, there isn't any detail on what the 930/04 designation implies. |

A 930/04 was used in the 49 state US 911SC in 1978 and 1979. Cars built for other markets used other engine types. The differences were in the small details.
The basic engines were similar. Over the years 1978-1983, and from market to market, there were differences in the compression ratio, intake runner size, head ports, exhaust details, fuel injection settings, cam timing, air pump and/or catalytic converter, etc. JR |
